Buntjer (Selvius/VanHattum), Bette "Joan" Kentwood, MI Joan passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 27, 2020 after a long battle with dementia. She was born on September 12, 1937 in Grand Rapids to Rudolph and Bette VanHattum. She graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in 1955. Joan married her high school sweetheart, David E. Selvius, in 1957. Joan was a stay at home mom raising their 5 children. Dave passed away in December 1978. Our family was very thankful when Dale came into our lives. They were married in 1981 and had a wonderful life until he passed away in 2020. Joan was a very loving and hands on mom, grandma, great-grandma, sister aunt, cousin, and friend. She was so proud of her children, grandchildren, and greats. She had an unconditional love for those dear to her. There was a smile for everyone she met, hugs and kisses quickly followed. Joan never had a bad word to say about anyone or anything. She believed in "getting up and ready for the day" and did that every day ... not a hair out of place and dressed to the nines. Our mom was beautiful inside and out. Grand Rapids Public Schools was very lucky to have her as a school bus driver for 20+ years. Joan was voted bus driver of the year and was recognized in the Santa Claus Parade. Her entire family filled the bus. Throughout Joan's life she met many wonderful people by way of camping. Moving from campground to campground was our family summers. Charles Mears State Park in Pentwater was the favorite. Our "Propane Pioneer" friends were also a great part of our early cramping days and some yet to this day. When Joan and Dale retired in 1999, they moved to Kingsgate Park in Nokomis, Florida. They enjoyed their many friends, eating out, swimming in the pool or just sitting in their backyard. They enjoyed the creek, the birds, the squirrels and occasionally an alligator. There was never a bad day! This was right up her alley because she loved the outdoors and the beautiful sunshine. Siesta Key Beach with the white sugary sand was a favorite of hers along with our beautiful Lake Michigan beaches. During the Christmas season they would decorate to the fullest. The neighbors couldn't wait for the lights to come on. Her family enjoyed visiting Florida as well. There were Places to Go, People to See and Things to Do! Our family motto being: A family that plays together, stays together! Joan is survived by her children, Rick (Patti) Selvius, John (Patty) Selvius, Jeanne (Ken) Hoort, Susan (Ron) DeGroot, Dave (Debbie) Selvius; her grandchildren, Jeremy Hoort, Jason (Kelsey) Beukema, Brad Selvius, Peter (Laurie) Hoort, Matthew (Kindra) Selvius, Erick (Care) Selvius, Michelle (Blake) Johnson, Jennifer (Josh) Peterson, and David (MaKayla) Selvius; 19 great-grandchildren; sister, Jean (Robert) Berghauser; brother, James R. VanHattum Sr.; sisters-in-law, Judy Rogers, Pat (Gary) Robinson, Bonnie (Dave) Allen, and Kit (late Richard) Buntjer; brother-in-law, James (Lyn) Selvius. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rudolph and Bette VanHattum, first husband, David E. Selvius; second husband, Dale Buntjer; in-laws, Ryan and Lucille Selvius, Gladys Selvius, Clarence and Ann Buntjer; great grandsons, Brett Michael Hoort and Lane Wyatt Peterson. The family would like to thank the staff at American House Kentwood for the care they gave our mom and Dale. Upon their return from Florida in November 2019 we knew the staff would be a wonderful addition to our family. Also, thank you to Spectrum Health Hospice for not only the wonderful care they gave them but being there for our family. What all of you do is amazing. Thank you. Charitable donations may be made to Spectrum Health Hospice of the Alzheimer's Association. The family will greet visitors on Wednesday, September 30, from 5 - 7 pm at Stroo Funeral Home, 1095 68th St. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49508. A celebration of Joan's life will be held at a later date.

Joan Selvius was one of the finest, kind hearted, and generous persons I ever met who only knew how to love and give. An extraordinary woman.

Joan & I became such special Sisters (in-law) when she & my awesome brother Dave married! We were so close with fun times, laughs, family get togethers, & life tragedies as well. My Mother Lucille & Joan were also very close & I will forever be so thankful for that! Being with Joan was such an incredible highlight in my life and I will forever both treasure & miss our
beautiful bond in special sisterhood!

what a wonderful and beautiful lady. I always knew we would be welcomed back to Florida each fall with that beautiful smile and hugs and kisses! I will always remember the smell of her perfume and how she always looked "perfect, not a hair out of place. Even in the pool". One of our mutual friends always teased that she just wanted to mess it up some day! They both will be missed by their KGP friends.

Dear Susie and family,
It has been many years but have never forgotten you and your awesome Mom - thank you both for being part of my life for as long as you have been and last of all thank you both for the wonderful memories. So sorry to hear of her passing as she was such an awesome lady, friendly and a ready smile to every one she met. May the many wonderful memories she left with each of you help in the healing that is to follow as you feel the warmth on your faces those precious memories and smiles bring. Praying for each of you and if you can would love to hear from you.

I’m sorry for your loss of your mom in law, Patti, dementia is a hard walk in life. I used to cut your hair at MGB, you surprised me once at a salon in Dorr for a visit! My mother in law also had dementia and passed in June of this year. May Gods peace be with you at this time and with your family.
