Leo Hernandez Obituary

Leo Johnny Hernandez 51, of Roseville, California passed away the morning of June 9, 2020. Leo was a lifelong resident of Roseville and attended Secret Ravine School in Newcastle and Sierra College in Rocklin, California. Leo was the youngest of seven children, and from a very young age developed a quick wit and became known for his brilliant comebacks, often keeping his family in stiches with laughter. Leo had a huge presence as was evident by his vast array of friends, some of whom are members of the Roseville Fire Department. It was not uncommon for Leo to run into friends wherever he went - he had a magnetic personality, was beloved in his Roseville neighborhood, and he was always the first to welcome a new neighbor with a Corona beer in hand. Leo was an active participant in the Special Olympics and excelled in downhill skiing, field hockey and soccer earning him a wall covered in gold medals and awards for his athletic prowess. Throughout his life Leo was a faithful 49er fan and would often train with Joe Montana when the team was training at Sierra College. His collection of jerseys and 49er memorabilia was extensive. Leo was employed at Dimple Records in Roseville for nearly 20 years. He loved all music, but preferred country music, and his favorite entertainer was Garth Brooks who he had the opportunity to see in concert several times (and even received a personally autographed photo from Garth). Leo loved to travel. Some of his happiest times were spent with his family on the Big Island of Hawaii, where he celebrated his 40th birthday overlooking the Pacific Ocean with a large gathering of family and friends. Leo was preceded in death by his father Ignacio, sisters Gloria Adams, Lupe Munoz and Lucy Goodman, his favorite Uncle Inez (Chivo Sr.) Sanchez, and his devoted beagle Bingo. He is survived by his mother Elvira Hernandez, brother's Mark (Roseville) and David Hernandez (Los Angeles) and sister Stella Bernhardt (Hilo, Hawaii), aunt Petra Sanchez (Marysville) and numerous nieces, nephews, loving cousins, god-children, friends, his caretaker and dear friend Elizabeth, and his dog Rascal B. Leo's friends and family are devastated at his unexpected passing. He was a bright shining light and lived his life with strength, courage and determination. He was the best of all of us, and will forever be in our hearts!
A private mass will be held on July 6, 2020, at St. Rose Catholic Church and will be live streamed on YouTube https:YouTube.com/c/SaintRoseofLimaRoseville/live

Very sad to hear of Leo’s passing. Our family was blessed to know Leo and his family for but a short time in 1980 when we moved in across the street from Wheatland, CA. Leo was there first thing to welcome us and the moving van to the neighborhood. What joyous neighbors. My children, Mike and Katie, became fast friends and always enjoyed having Leo as part of their neighborhood games and activities. We always remember him sitting outside waiting for us to come home. We were sad when we had to move to a Chico, CA after just nine months. We will always remember Leos bright smile and love of our family. Peace be with you Leo and his family.

He use to call our house, he was friends with our daughter. What a friendly guy, he always would chat with us and tell us about his dog, his job, about Sierra College his family and Hawaii. He had a good life and was always happy when he called. Our deepest sympathy to his family.

I had the pleasure of meeting Leo while eating lunch at the Sierra College cafeteria. We started talking and he was just the sweetest person. We became friends and I remember meeting his sweet mom one time. That was over 15 years ago and I have since moved away and had a family. But I often thought about Leo and how he was doing. Im so sorry to hear of his passing and Im so grateful I was able to get to know him. He was a very special person. Sending love to the Hernandez family.

This is my story of how Leo changed my life.
Leo and I met in the Winter of 1998 while I was assigned as the U.S. Marine Corps recruiter in Roseville. Leo worked at Dimple Records and my office was just across the parking lot. Leo introduced himself one morning while I was walking past to get coffee. That was the beginning of a great friendship. We talked every day expect his days off. I worked weekends and looked across the parking lot wishing Leo were there so we could talk country music. We would quiz each other all the time but, he remains the undisputed name that tune King! Leo taught me how to laugh again. Over the next year Leo spoke of his niece (Monica) often. He shared stories about his Family, weekend festivities and fun things he was doing. He told me Monica worked in the same complex right in-between our offices. One Friday evening I was making phone calls when the love of my life walked in to deliver Christmas cookies. Little did I know Leo was telling Monica about me as well. Neither one of us realized it at this cookie exchange but the stage was clearly set.
Six months passed. Monica and I had something special. I had also achieved a ten-year goal and received orders to presidential duty. I spoke to Leo for a week about this, trying to get the nerve to tell Monica that I had to leave. All those good times Leo told me about were making sense now. My Faith in God gave me the strength to turn down the orders and get out of the Marines with hopes of joining this amazing Family. This September Monica and I will be married 20 years. I remember the first time I met Ignacio and Elvira. Leo was right there quick to point out that we were friends first. We both took great pride in telling people this over the past 20 years. Leo changed my life forever because he was born with the heart of a lion. I will forever be grateful for our Family and friendship.
