Katherine Morey Obituary
Katherine Francisca Swier Morey

Choteau —Katherine Francisca Swier Morey, 93, of Butte, Montana died Friday, December 6, 2013 at the Butte Care and Rehabilitation Center. Katherine was born September 19, 1920, in St. Boniface, Manitoba, Canada to Dutch immigrants, Gerrit and Aagje Swier.

Gerrit and Aagje brought their two young daughters, Esther and Katherine, to Montana where they homesteaded in the Valier area in a Dutch community. Two sons, Gerrit and Frans were born there. Stories of Katherine's childhood enthralled friend and family. It was a hard life, but one that was filled with love and laughter.

Katherine was an independent young woman who worked in the shipyards in Portland during World War II with her sister Esther. At the close of the war she, her sister and a good friend, Bucky, bought horses and rode them from Portland, Oregon to Valier, Montana. The trip took them twenty eight days in the saddle. Their trip was documented in a Montana newspaper after their arrival, not many could claim such a feat.

Katherine married Cecil Wilson Morey April 30, 1948 in Valier. They built two houses together in Choteau and raised three daughters: Judy, Janet and Winnie. Katherine was a devoted stay at home mother who instilled strong values in her children along with her husband. She and Cecil were known in Choteau for their large gardens, her ability to can and freeze all they grew, and their generosity of sharing their bounty.

Katherine and Cecil loved to dance and travel to visit relatives. They were active members of the Old Time Fiddlers, and Katherine was a member of the American Legion. Katherine moved to Butte to be near her daughter Janet after Cecil's death.

Katherine was preceded in death by husband Cecil, her parents, brothers Gerrit and Fans, daughter Winnie, and an infant son. Survivors include her sister Ester Pritchard, Klamath Falls, Oregon daughters Judy (Stew) Cleave of Salem, Oregon (Shawn, Jennifer, Christopher, and Richard), Janet Helfrich of Butte, Montana (Jay, Brain, John, Kevin, Carrie, and Michael), Winnie's children (James Ackerson, Neal Ackerson, Alex Ackerson, and Victoria Berger) and eighteen great grandchildren.

A celebration of Katherine's life will be planned for a date in the summer of 2014.
