Leslie Peters Obituary

BOISE, Idaho - Leslie Hamilton "Les" Peters, 93, an Army veteran and longtime Great Falls artist, died of natural causes Thursday at his daughter's home in Boise, Idaho.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date in Great Falls. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Cremation Society of Idaho in Boise.
The family of Leslie Hamilton Peters announces his passing at home with his daughter Lindsey and her husband Rich Linford, in Boise, Idaho, on the evening of Dec. 2, 2010.
Les lived a long and wonderful life, leaving an amazing legacy through his artwork and his work at helping to establish the C.M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Mont.
Les was born July 18, 1917, in Great Falls. As a child, he loved the time he spent with his family at their cabin in the Little Belt Mountains east of Great Falls. He attended the University of Montana for a year and studied for one year at the University of Oregon before serving in the Army with the 11th Cavalry on the Mexican-California border. In 1942, the Cavalry was disbanded and Les was transferred to an infantry division, later serving in France and Germany with the 13th Armored Division in World War II.
During his time in the Army, he met the love of his life, Barbara Lyons, of New York. Les and Barby were married in August of 1945. They moved to New York where Les studied for a year at the Art Students League and the Central Park School of Art. He and Barby returned to Great Falls, where they raised five daughters. Les immersed himself in the life he loved, seeing and painting wildlife and the Western lifestyle.
Les continued to paint and sculpt throughout his life, giving generously of his time and talents, becoming a mentor and friend to many. On most days, Les could be found painting at his brick studio in Great Falls. Even though he may have been in the process of finishing up a painting to get it sent off to a gallery or art patron, he always pushed back his easel to welcome visits from his friends and those interested in seeing his artwork and extensive collection of Native American artifacts. Les's beautiful artwork can be found throughout Montana and in private collections throughout the United States. Some of Les's greater accomplishments were a 90-foot mural for the Florence Hotel in Missoula, which now hangs at the Missoula airport, dioramas in the State Historical Society in Helena and a small painting that was presented to President Eisenhower.
He is survived by his five daughters: Suzy Peters (Bob Ruch) of Bainbridge Island, Wash., Deb Cole (Bob) of Missoula, Mont., Cindy Hilderbrand (Martell) of Billings, Mont., and Lindsey Linford (Rich), and Margot Nye (Tracy) of Boise, Idaho; grandchildren, Troy, Libby and Ford Clary, Travis and Michael Cole, Ryan and Abby Linford and Landon, Emily, Logan and Connor Nye; great-grandchildren, Parker and Whitney Clary; his sister, Mildred Duncan; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by Barby; his parents, Julius and Julia Peters; his brother, Julius Jr. (June); and sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Holbrook.
Donations may be made to St. Luke's Hospice; or a charity of your choice.
Thank you to Les's many caregivers, Emma, Cathy, Christina and especially Angelina. Thank you to our special hospice team Linda, Jennifer, Judith, Brian, Dan and Anna. Dad, keep "laughin' and scratchin'!"

My condolances to the Peters family ~

I can still see,as a child, Les Peters walking into the back of the Glass Art Shop. He was such a kind hearted person and had a the nicest smile. He was one of a kind and a legend in his own right.
My thoughts are with his family.

I was fortunate to have Les paint Montana wildlife scenes for both of our children when they were born. I enjoy many of his beautiful paintings in our home and remember the stories my grandmother (Jean Dunning) and my mother (Loretta Pearce) told of Les' visits while they worked at my great uncle Alex Gordon's Glass Art Shop. Les will always be one of Montana's treasures and my sympathy is extended to all of his loved ones.

Les was a great contributer to the art legacy of Great Falls and Montana. His art will live on. We had several interesting visits about his father, Julius. and my grandfather, "Hardrock" Coolidge, who were in business together in the early days of Montana's oil and gas industry back in the 1920's. So long Les, and thanks for the memories. Our sympathy to all of Les's family.

I also remember Les as the father of Suzy. I can remember going to their house and studio while in jr. high. The picture is just like I remember so many years ago. I was always so impressed because he was the only real artist I could say I knew. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers. Sharla Moore (Hill)

I remember Les as the father of Suzy a friend from school. He was an extremely talented artist and I visited with him once in his studio over by the CC Towers. His eyesight was failing but he was still productive , which was a blessing to those of us who saw him work and loved his talent. I watched him on a daily basis do the wall-mural at Montana Bank (now 1st Interstate) and although noone was suppose to have any piece of the mural when they tore it down, my mother secured a small piece and had Les do a small bird on it for her. His talent will be missed. Condolences to his family. Michael McPherson
