Great Falls —Walter K. "Dutch" Backer passed away peacefully on June 18, 2013.

In accordance with his request, cremation has taken place and a private celebration of his life will be held on June 30, 2013.

Walter was born in Butte, MT on May 27, 1925 to Anton and Martha Backer.

Walter served his country during WWII, Korea and Vietnam in the U. S. Navy. He also served two deployments to Antarctica. Walter had an unsurpassable love for his country, his friends, and his family. He worked for the State of Washington after he retired from the Navy. He and his loving wife, Florence, recently moved back to Great Falls to be with family.

Walter is survived by his wife, Florence; daughters Gail (Fred) Schafer and Deborah (David) Hopkins; son Walt (Nancy) Backer; niece Diane (James) Merriam; nephew Ronald (Kathy) Backer; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; brother Ruben; and sisters Dorothy Miller and LaVern Holenstein.
