Bernard "Bernie" Joseph McCarthy

GREAT FALLS —Bernard "Bernie" Joseph McCarthy, 85, of Great Falls, passed away on Tuesday, October 21, 2014.

Per his request no services are being planned. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Schnider Funeral Home.

Bernie was born on August 31, 1929 to Wilford and Beatrice (Smith) McCarthy at Highland Park, Michigan. He joined the Army in 1947 and stationed in Okinawa. At the end of 1947 the Air Force was began and he made the choice to transfer over to the Air Force. During his military career he was stationed in Japan, Korea, Newfoundland, and finally retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant at Malmstrom AFB.

He married Donna Wheeler on February 26, 1949 in Roslyn, New York. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Sons of the Pioneers.

Bernie enjoyed music, especially collecting records. He also had a massive collection of military books.

He is survived by his wife Donna McCarthy of Great Falls; son Michael McCarthy of Three Forks; daughter Deanne McCarthy of Great Falls; and granddaughter Danielle McCarthy-Stevens.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Donald McCarthy.

I was stationed at Malmstrom AFB with Sergeant McCarthy from 1960 to 1966. We were assigned to the Great Falls Air Defense Center (SAGE). He was highly respected by all. Rest in peace Sarge.
