Martha Carlin Obituary

Carlin, Martha (Marte) Joan

Martha (Marte) Joan Carlin, 61, passed from this world on Sunday, March 17, 2013, as she wished, with characteristic grace, surrounded at home by beloved family and friends, to song and celebration of a life lived with passion and endless compassion. Marte's spontaneous kindness and dedication to justice and peace for loved ones and strangers alike remained steadfast through joyous times and adversity, and will live on through all whose lives she touched.

Born in Oconto, Wisconsin to the Carlin family of Lena and raised on the family farm, Marte was 6th of 11 children , preceded in passing by mother, Mary, father, Robert, sister, Susan Gabriel, and brother, Robert, and survived by sisters Carol (Charlie) Wilbur, Patricia (David) Anderson, Mary (John) Drysdale, Jane Carlin, Jean (John) Bickel, Margaret (John) Knoblauch, Linda (Todd) Heider; brother, Steve (Karen) Carlin; children, Elizabeth (Kevin) Riebe, Robert Cook and Noble Carlin Johnson; grandchildren Alexis, Adam and Arron, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousin, nieces, nephews, dear friends and special friend, Joe.

Marte's varied pursuits, always centered on serving others, included working as a legal administrative assistant, nursing assistant, medical technician, in real estate sales, home architectural design, and was creator of Door County's first Multiple Listing Service. She was owner/manager/staff of Oconto's White Cap Café, caretaker for the elderly, local organizer for several state and national political campaigns, and playwright/producer.

Her stage play "Haven", won praise in Green Bay, Marinette, DePere and Eau Claire for portraying the personal casualties and pervasiveness of domestic abuse. Building on that success, Marte founded "Women Against Domestic Abuse", where she called on her many acquired skills to protect and help abused spouses restart their lives, and to advocate for those marginalized by an often dysfunctional justice system. WADA served the elderly, disabled and minorities as well, seeking justice wherever it was found lacking.

As President of WADA, Marte obtained reduced sentencing, exoneration or release from incarceration for many people left vulnerable by a lack of legal representation. With sharp investigative skills and critical analysis, and aided by her friendly spirit and endless determination, Marte spent years gathering and organizing volumes of documentation and testimony to overturn a case of wrongful conviction which, based on her groundbreaking work, is currently being pursued by The Innocence Project.

In Marte's "Choices" program, she reached out to help young people in student groups throughout Northeast Wisconsin by willingly revealing wounds to her own heart with her deeply personal presentations about the devastating effects of drunk driving. Marte also served on the Governor's Council on Domestic Abuse, helped to establish and support Green Bay's Multicultural Center, and organized and participated in numerous peace actions.

While Marte will be dearly missed, her spirit lives on in the untold number of lives she touched, and continues to make a difference to this world. No one with difficulties within Marte's reach was ever left without a helping hand. No one who opened themselves to her spirit can help but feel that her unconditional love and compassion for all people is now theirs.

We love you, Marte….more….to infinity!

A life celebration will be held Sunday afternoon, June 9th, at Brown County Reforestation Camp Lodge, 4418 Reforestation Road, Green Bay (near New Zoo, Suamico). All-day Marte party, remembrance 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Share a memory, a story, a song, and a dish to pass. Blaney Funeral Home is assisting the family. To the Carlin Family,

I am sorry to hear about your loss.
I have not seen Martha for a long time. We were in the same class in Lena High School. I do remember her fun loving approach to life and her smile. I am sure she is still smiling down on us.

Marte, I thought of you today, but that is nothing new. I thought about you yesterday and before that too. I think of you in silence, I often speak your name. All I have are memories and a picture in a frame. Your memory is a keepsake, of which I will never part. God has you in His arms but I have you in my heart.

You will be in my heart forever.......until we meet again.
Love You.....Lucy

Our heartfelt condolences to all the Carlin family.

Candy Lueck,
Dear family and friends of marti i would like to say that i am so sorry for your loss, even though we didn't have much time together me and marti felt asthough we had known each other all of are lives,we both have helped anybody in need of anything we could help them with even if we had to do without ourselfs,to me marti was an outstanding person with a heart of gold. Our dear lord felt that marti had suffered enough and had called her home, but dont you think that she is gone because she still will be looking over all of us and will protect us believe me. And to her sisters and son and her friend joe you have given marti execeptional care and i felt the love it radiated all around. And to those of you that didn't really know her personally, this women was strong, never complaining about her pain or why she got cancer, the smile on her face that you see was always there no matter what. She told me how very much she loved singing with her sisters and that she loved them so very much and that she was very close to her family. Marti has helped alot of people in her life with her organization, she so wanted to see a young man be freed from prison for being acussed of a crime he didn't do he was set up even though she was ill she never gave up on this young man and now the truth will come out and hopefully he will be a free man very soon. I could go on and on about how wonderful this women was but all will come out with all the articals that was written about her and all will know.I met marti at a breast cancer retreat which she was suppose to be at another one but i was greatful that happened because i would have never had the great opportunity to have met her and her family and a man she really cared about his name is joe she loved him so much she wanted me to tell him.I will miss her dearly may god hold her gently in his arms i will see you again my dear friend in the gloryious light of heaven i know you will be at the gate to greet me till we met again my friend. Love you with all my heart and soul god bless all you have touched with your kindness. I will be planting a tree in your honor in the magnifiicent national forest.A place of inspiration for all who pass through and a sanctuary for wild things of rare beauty and grace. Love candy
