Reinke, Dr. Mark

Dr. Mark K. Reinke passed away peacefully Christmas Day, December 25, 2013 at the age of 57 with his family by his side, following his courageous fight with pancreatic cancer. He fought his cancer with such grace, humor and dignity; setting an example for all the lives he has touched. He was a strong Christian, decorated Air Force pilot, respected surgeon, loving husband, and caring, proud father of five.

Mark obtained undergraduate degrees from the University of North Dakota and Arizona State. He also was a former pilot and commander in the Air Force. He met Kathy, his wife, while both served as EMT's at FM Ambulance in 1979. They were married in Fargo, ND in September of 1986. Mark then went on to receive his medical degree in 1992 from Rush Medical School in Chicago.

Mark joined NEW ENT, in Green Bay as a partner in 1997 where he distinguished himself as an ear, nose and throat surgeon with an additional specialty in sleep medicine. He had many hobbies and passions. He alone is leaving a legacy of over 800 different hostas species in the yard. He was a voracious reader, instilling this skill in all his children. He was an avid marathon runner, loved downhill skiing, playing the banjo, journaling, fishing with his father and brother-in-laws, spending time with his family on vacations, and having family reunions every year at GOD (Good Ole' Days), a resort in northern Minnesota. He could always be found sporting his Hawaiian shirts during all of these activities, embarrassing his children, which he was known to often do.

Mark held multiple leadership positions in the local and state medical communities. He most recently served as Medical Staff President of Bellin Health and also served on the Bellin Board of Directors. He was past President of the WI Society of Otolaryngology. He additionally served in various leaderships roles at Ascension Lutheran Church.

Mark retired immediately from his medical practice upon learning of his diagnosis in December 2012. During his last year Mark embarked on a bucket list of adventures. The most rewarding adventure was being able to form closer relationships with a number of friends. He often shared with all of them, "it is not about the length of your life but about the depth of your life". It was his strong-will to live, unwavering faith, love of our Heavenly Father, and prayers from family friends that carried him through these last 13 months of treatments and endless doctor visits.

Mark was a dedicated husband; father, brother, friend and physician. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Kathy, their daughters Rhiannon, Robin, Rebecca, Rochelle, his son Ryan and his dog, Vogue. He is also survived by his father, Gary Reinke of Fargo, ND and step-mother Myrna, sister Dr. Karen and brother -in-law Don Garnaas, Sioux Falls, SD, father and mother -in-law Russell and Loretta Abel, Fargo, ND and sisters-in-law Susan Reinke Walsh, Rochester, MN, Patricia Abel Campbell, Minneapolis, MN, Brenda Abel Francis, Edina, MN, Stephanie Abel Bares, Des Moines, IA and brother -in-law Ken (Mary Jo) Abel and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lorraine Reinke and brother Troy Reinke, maternal grandparents, August and Esther Kuehl and paternal grandparents, John and Mathilda "Tillie" Reinke.

The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers and support from countless individuals. This includes our Ascension family, his many colleagues, the Bellin Health Family, his physician care team, the Bellin Cancer Center, and the staff of Unity Hospice.

A visitation for family, friends and colleagues is scheduled at Ascension Lutheran Church, 2911 Libal St, Green Bay, WI from 4:00 - 8:00pm, Friday, January 3rd. The service and Celebration of Mark's life will commence at 10:30am at Ascension Lutheran Church on Saturday, January 4th with a visitation preceding the service from 9:30am - 10:15am. Pastors Luther and Lori Swenson will be officiating. On-line condolences may be posted at www.cotterfuneralhome.com or at Mark Reinke's Caring Bridge site www.caringbridge.org/visit/markreinke. In lieu of floral arrangements, memorial funds have been established for Pancreatic Cancer Action Network or Ascension Lutheran Church, Green Bay, WI.

We are sorry to hear about Dr. Reinke's passing. He performed two surgeries on my son and we saw him many times. My son, Ryan, my husband, and myself are sad to hear about his suffering. Dr. Reinke made us laugh a lot. He said "I have a Ryan too." He is truly one of the nicest people we have ever met. We will miss him and remember him often. Our deepest sympathies for your loss.

Dear Family,
Just wanted you to know how much my husband and I appreciated your dad. We were patients of his and you don't. know me, but just had to let you, know he is one of the best physicians that we ever had. We too had to go to many physicians and he was just a wonderful man and great physician. We appreciated him very much. May God bless all of you and bring you peace. I did not know Dr. Reinke personally but my husband Tim came to know Mark as he worked with him through his cancer treatment with Bellin. Tim said "What a truly amazing man... truly" Listening to the stories of Dr. Reinke made me smile. I feel so thankful, so blessed that my husband was given the opportunity to meet & work with Dr. Reinke. I can say without a doubt, Mark was definitely an Angel here on earth and as he looks down upon his family from heaven he will certainly be their Guardian.

Our Deepest Sympathies & God's richest blessings to his loving wife & children.

Respectfully,
The Grell Family

We first met Dr. Reinke when my daughter was almost 2 years old and needed ear tubes.Well, 3 sets of tubes and many visits later Dr. Reinke took an everlasting place in our hearts. He always remembered that her favorite flavored sucker was purple. He'd talk about taking her home with him because our little blonde haired blue eyed little girl would fit in with his girls (this was when he only had girls). He was so patient and compassionate with her, we couldn't of asked for a better doctor. Now 17 years old, she'll tell you that Dr. Reinke is still her favorite doctor. He was truly one of a kind. He will be greatly missed.

Over the years, my dad has always talked about Mark. How he used to be a fighter pilot and then switched to being a doctor. For those of you unfamiliar with piloting in the Air Force, or Navy, to be a fighter pilot, they take literally the top 1-5 students from each undergraduate class to proceed on to fighter school. Many have said that after completing pilot school in the Air Force, especially fighter school, you can do literally anything you put your mind to. Going on to medical school was still difficult, but having the pilot background I am sure helped his efforts tremendously. Along with my father and mother, Mark has been a role model and inspiration for my career in the Air Force and government. He has proved that a person can switch excellent careers for a passion to help others. He truly made my family smile when he surprised us at my dad's promotion in Fargo in May. The Air Force fighter community has lost a great pilot, and many others have lost someone so much closer. May his spirit and kindness live on forever.

My sympathy goes out to Dr Reinke's family. I was a patient of his a few years ago. I found him to be very caring and personable in addition to his knowledge of being a wonderful doctor. You have lost a good man and Green Bay has lost a wonderful doctor. God be with you during this very trying time in your life.

Mark and I were high school classmates, wrestling team mates and were inducted into our high school hall of fame at the same time. I was fortunate and blessed to be his friend and confidant. His accomplishments while keeping the common touch were nothing short of remarkable. The only thing that helps with the sting of our loss is knowing who important and how true his faith life was to him and his family. We could all live several lifetimes and not have the opportunity to met and know such a stellar caring humanitarian. God will bless his memory and fortify us all as we adjust to life with only memories of Dr. Mark. He was loved and will be missed but never forgotten

Dr Reinke was crucial is restoring the hearing in one of my foster children in 1998. She could not hear and he pulled together all of her old records and figured out how many ear infections she had. He operated on her and ordered speech therapy. She was in therapy for 1 year. She is 17 years old now. If it wasn't for Dr Reinke, that little girl may have had permanent irreversible damage. He was an amazing Doctor and one of the kindest human beings I ever met. The world was a better place because of him and heaven has gained a great soul. Thank you Dr Reinke for all you did for so many.

Sincere sympathy to the Reinke family, may the sadness and loss you are feeling in your heart right now, be replaced with happiness and joy by the memories he has bestowed upon you. I did not know your husband / dad personally, just a "hi" every now and then, but I have heard such wonderful things about him from everyone who knew him. God be with you during this difficult time. It is not about the amount of time on Earth that is given us, but the way we utilize our time, and what we do with the resources that are given us. He has made you proud.. God Bless
