On June 3, 2011, Norbert Van Egeren, 100, passed away peacefully at home sitting in his chair with his cat on his lap. Norbert was born October 29, 1910 on a farm near New Franken, WI. He married Elsie VanderMuss in 1933. They had six children and a long life together. Elsie passed away at the age of 96 in 2007. Norbert loved his family, many friends, neighbors, and all the kind, good people who took care of him and Elsie over the years. Norbert retired from a local paper mill many years ago. He and Elsie enjoyed traveling in the US and Europe. Norbert had only an eighth grade education. He was self-taught and an avid reader on a wide range of topics. He remained interested in learning and in world events to the end of his life.

Norbert is survived by his six children, Donald Van Egeren, Richard (Alice) Van Egeren, Lawrence Van Egeren, Thomas (Gigi) Van Egeren, Timothy Van Egeren and Linda (Stephen) Mose; his 11 grandchildren; his 19 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Marjorie Nachtwey, Agnes Marchant, and Josephine Berken; his many nieces and nephews; and his many friends. Norbert was preceded in death by his wife Elsie; his parents, John (Mary) Van Egeren; his brother, Francis; and his daughter-in-law, Elinor. Norbert and his family were fortunate to have wonderful, compassionate care provided by caregivers Shelly VanKilsdonk and Judy Enstrom, volunteer Jim Bowker, and the staff of the Unity Hospice program.

Friends may call at Proko-Wall Funeral Home, 1630 E. Mason St. on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m Prayer service will be at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation will continue from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Mass of Christian Burial 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Cross Church, 3009 Bay Settlement Road with Fr. Tom Hagendorf officiating.
