As a teenager he made his first ham radio (call letters) W9PHF and became a member of the American Radio Relay League. He graduated from University of Wisconsin Stevens Point with a B.S. double major in chemistry and physics. He received his M.S. from Syracuse University, majoring in chemistry. With post graduate credits of 65+. From there, he continued his studies at 16 different universities: Colorado State, Marquette University of Milwaukee, University of Washington Seattle, University of Colorado Boulder, University of Florida, in Holbrook New York, College of Holy Cross Worcester in Massachusetts, Penn State/College Park in Pennsylvania, University of Illinois, UW Colleges including, Madison, Eau Claire, Ripon, Oshkosh, La Cross and University of Wisconsin Green Bay.

In addition, he set up the science department at the new Southwest High School, where he was the department head, taught AP chemistry, physics and ran their planetarium. He retired in 1994. His other jobs included, being a nursing chemistry instructor at North Western Technical College, Brown County civil defense instructor, teaching radiological monitoring and being a chemistry instructor at University of Wisconsin Green Bay.

Ray loved a challenge, which included a one year research study at the Institute of Paper Chemistry on cellulose chemistry and a one year chemical research position on water pollution in the East River of Green Bay. He also published a modification of cellular material in TAPPI, and a U.S. patent on modification of cellulose in electrical insulation transformers used by Allis Chalmers Corp. Ray was also a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Howard, and a Charter member of the Duck Creek council #6279 Knights of Columbus 4th Degree.

In 1990 he married his soul mate, Lynn Anderson. Together they enjoyed many years of happiness while traveling, cruising, being at their cottage in Lakewood and wintering at their home in The Villages, Florida. He also enjoyed reading many books from his extensive religious library, as well as devoutly attending daily Mass, both at home in Florida and while on vacation. I´d like to say I loved sciences more but that was the subject I struggled with the most..his background helped me achieve chemistry student of the year award in college though. I remember a few of us went Christmas caroling at his house Also, I will never forget the long problems he would do on the sliding chalkboards and continue the problems as he slid the boards up down across I do remember not being able to stop giggling in his class once -those moments where you look at your friend and the more you try to stop the more you can´t stop. I also remember that if you properly labeled your graphs you could raise your grade from like a C to an A . Anyway, I never felt "stressed" in his class like some classes. Also, I can attest to Jon´s statement about making an explosion in chem lab-he showed up in Spanish class with holes in his shirt. He had a good heart and it seems like he really enjoyed teaching.

It’s been many years but seeing this is a gut punch.

Ray was simply the greatest teacher I had in ALL my years of school. Never before has a teacher brought a subject to life with great examples and activities. He had a great sense of humor and knew how to poke back at us students. We respected Ray greatly. He was compassionate as well. One day when we had a substitute I went back into the chemical stores and mixed my own little fireworks in the lab. He could have suspended or expelled me from class but saw the value in a solid student and just made it go away.

I chose engineering as my major, much from the Inspiration and leadership he provided to us. I reached out to him a couple years ago on FB to tell him what I thought of him. I only hope he got the message so he knew what he did for many kids like me.

Farewell Ray...Thanks for the inspiration and Godspeed!!

Jon
