Winter, Roger C.

Roger C. Winter, 81, of Marinette, passed away Wednesday morning, April 17, 2013, at Bay Area Medical Center. He was born January 15, 1932 in Shawano, Wisconsin to Curtis and Hildegard (nee Schoenick) Winter.

Roger spent his earliest years in Shawano until moving to Kaukauna with his family where he graduated from high school. He enlisted in the United States Army and was a veteran of service in the Korean War. Roger went on to spend a ten-year enlistment in the Army, serving in various duty stations around the world. In 1954 he married the former Mabel Lardinois. After Roger's discharge from service they settled in Green Bay where he worked as inventory manager for Braman's Carpet Warehouse. They also operated a tavern business in Green Bay, Roger's Tap.

In 1971 Roger and Mabel moved to Marinette where they operated the Surf Club on Shore Drive until his retirement in 1993. Roger loved playing golf and in retirement worked at Little River Country Club. Also an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed duck hunting, fishing and camping. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, had served as church Treasurer and was active in the Men's Group.

Roger is survived by his wife, Mabel; one daughter, Sherry Winter, of Marinette; brothers and sisters, Richard (Maureen) Winter of Neenah, Nancy (Robert) Martin of Porterfield, James (Myrna) Winter of Shawano, Mary Wastel of Shawano and Michael (Paula) Winter of Green Bay; many nieces and nephews; and his special dog, Abby.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Jean (Duane) Speering and Betty (Robert) DeCoster.

Friends may call at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Marinette after 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the church with the Rev. James Wendt officiating. An Honors Ceremony will be conducted by the Military Twenty-Year Club. Burial will be in Glenwood Memorial Gardens.

Hansen-Onion-Martell funeral home is serving the family.

A special thank you is extended to medical caregivers, Dr. Arora and Dr. Halaweh; the nurses and staff of the ICU at Bay Area Medical Center; and to special family members, Nancy Martin and Mike Winter for their constant presence and support.
