Johnson, Donald L.

Donald L. "Don" Johnson, 89, Green Bay, died peacefully, Friday, May 3, 2013, at his home. He was born Aug. 2, 1923, in Stoughton, WI to Oscar A. and Ethel (Merwin) Johnson. He moved to Madison when he was two years old and lived there until the end of high school. Don graduated from Madison Central High in 1941. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and graduated from flight training schools and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant as a Pilot. Don went through B-24 Liberator training and was assigned a flight crew of nine men. He went overseas to the South Pacific and flew long range missions until the end of the war. Don located to Clark Field in The Philippines until he was sent home in 1946 as a 1st Lieutenant.

Don worked for the Burroughs Adding Machine Co. until 1959 and then for the Gates Rubber Company until his retirement in 1975.

Don was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars since 1978. He was a Post Commander of Post #2113 in De Pere and transferred to Green Bay and served as the Commander of Post #2037 for three years. He was currently a member of the VFW of Duck Creek Post #7534. Don was a member of the Brown County VFW Council and was Commander four different terms. He was active at the VFW State Department level for many years. He was very active in the Military Order of the Cooties since 1993. Don was a Pup Tent Commander #23 three different terms. He was also active in the Grand of WI. Don was a member of the United Patriotic Society for years and had served as President. He was named the UPS Veteran of the Year and had also been named Grand of Wisconsin Cootie of the Year.

Don was an active member of the Optimist International since 1983. He transferred from the Pulaski Club in 1989 to the Senior Optimist Club. He was very active in fund raising, brat-fries, etc. He served as the club president four different terms. He was the WINUM District Lieutenant Governor. Don was an avid Packers fan, attended Packers Games, both home and away and attended five Super Bowls.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy; his sons and daughters-in-law, James and Patti Johnson, CA; Jay and Shelley Johnson, Sobieski; Jack and Mary Ellen Johnson, Green Bay; his daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Brad Post, De Pere; six grandchildren, Michael, Elizabeth, Morgan, Lilly, Alexis, and Brock; a great grandson, Joseph, Jr.; a sister, Esther Minett, CO; a sister-in-law, Cathy Johnson, Wausau, two brothers-in-law, Jim (Mary) Barlament and Rick (Jill) Barlament, all of Green Bay.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Russell Johnson.

Friends may call at Blaney Funeral Home, 1521 Shawano Ave., from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday. There will be a VFW Post #7534 Memorial Service at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Friends may also call at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1484 Ninth Street, from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church with Rev. Patrick C.
