Gale, Calvin W.

Calvin W. Gale, 85, Canal Road, Houghton, died on May 31, 2013, at Omega House, in Houghton, Mich.

He was born May 7, 1928, in Shawano, Wis., a son of Clifford and Verda Gale. Following graduation from West High School in Green Bay, Cal served in the United States Marine Corps. In 1951, he married the former Laurine Givler of Green Bay and in 1964 he recevied his Doctorate in Education from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Cal taught science and mathematics at Milton High School in Wisconsin and at the University's Wisconsin High School in Madison; science education at the University of Wisconsin; and in 1969 became the first Director of Teacher Education at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, where he also began the Summer Youth Program for teenagers. He had been Academic Vice President there, then Dean of Special Academic Programs until his retirement in 1989 as Professor Emeritus.

In 1964, Cal was elected to membership in the National Association for Research and Science Teaching and in 1968, he was elected a Fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

He was a long-time member of the Houghton Rotary Club and a recipient of their Paul Harris Award. He helped Oak House in Hancock, get their state accreditation and served on their board for over 20 years. He was also a driver for Little Brothers, Friends of the Elderly for more than 20 years. Besides his family, his favorite pastimes were the Green Bay Packers for which he had season tickets for more than 50 years, railroads and his Geezer bridge games, with Bill, Dan, Joe and Wayne.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Laurie; daughters, Janet Gale, Sturgeon Bay, Wis.; and Susan (Mike) Ward, Green Bay; sons, Bill, Houghton; and John, Laurium, Mich.; grandchildren, Meghan and Brandon (Casey) McCall, Green Bay; a brother and sister-in-law, Stuart and Marilyn Gale, Waukesha, Wis.; a sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Phil Winkel, Fitchburg, Wis.; a sister, Beth Daggett, Middleton, Wis.; nieces and nephews.

Cal's family invites friends to visit them on Monday, June 3, from 5 to 7 on the third floor of The Bluffs in Houghton.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, Cal requested memorials to Little Brothers, Friends of the Elderly, Houghton Rotary Club or Omega House.
