Jean Frank Obituary

Jean Frank

Gillett - Jean Frank, 73, of Gillett, completed her transition to her heavenly home on September 13, 2020.

Jean was born in Madison, WI and spent some of her early years as a square dancer, traveling the state with the Little Badger Squares. She played alto saxophone in high school, and studied Early Childhood Education at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, graduating in 1972. There, she met and married her husband of 50 years, Gary. Together, they moved to Washington, DC, before settling on Gary's family farm in 1977.

Jean spent her life teaching, first as a preschool teacher, and later spent 18 years as a reading tutor for the Gillett Elementary School. She engaged in 4-H leadership for over 40 years, was a charter member of the Gillett Future Farmers of America (FFA) Alumni, and was a driving force in the Gillett Public Library. In addition, she taught Sunday school and volunteered at the Madison Children's Museum.

After Gary and Jean retired in 2001, they had the opportunity to travel with family and friends. Jean traveled widely in the US and abroad, visiting South Africa, Australia, Norway, and Greece, among many other places; Jean visited five continents and Central America between 2001 and 2019. Several of her great-nieces and great-nephews were baptized in water that she brought back from the River Jordan in Israel. Jean was an avid photographer, gardener, quilter, and a voracious reader who passed her love of books to her children. She took great pride in her family, and was a loyal sister, mother, wife, great-great-great aunt, and friend.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Garwood Arthur Mather and Lovina Mae (Austin) Mather; her son, Lance Jerome Frank; her "German son," Klaus Duft and his son, Jonas Duft.

She is survived by her husband, Gary George Frank of Gillett, WI; her daughter, Carlye Sina Frank of Winter Park, FL; her "German daughter," Wiltraud Duft of Leeheim, Germany; her sisters, Jeri Lyn (Mather) Cramer of Minneapolis, MN and Judy Mae (Mather) Baukin of Dixon, TN; and many generations of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at Christ Lutheran Church in Hintz from 2 pm until the funeral service at 4 pm with Pastor Michael Paholke officiating. Gruetzmacher Funeral Home in Suring is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences can be expressed at www.gruetzmacherfuneralhome.com.

With thanks to Bellin Hospital Cancer Team (Green Bay, WI) and Unity Hospice (Shawano, WI) for their tireless care during Jean's battle with pancreatic cancer.

Gary & Family,
We were saddened to hear of Jean's passing. Our condolences to you and your family. Jean was truly one of those people who left her community and the world a much better place because of her presence. The two of you had a great life together, and we hope the wonderful memories of your extensive travel and the lives you positively touched along the way will give you comfort in this time of sorrow.

I was so excited when my phone rang with Mrs, Frank’s name coming up tonight. We write back and forth and I had just written to her on Saturday. She always, always writes back, many times with a handwritten letter, and sometimes surprised me with a phone call. When I heard Gary’s voice on the other end, I just knew that I had lost my very dear friend. There are few people in this world that I love as much as Mrs. Frank. What a beautiful lady who was such a good friend to me. She spent 18 years coming into my classroom to read with my students missing very, very few weeks. She celebrated every classroom victory with me, and she loved every single child that she and I worked with, She was always there for my students and my own children including when my daughter Ashley had her big surgeries at Johns Hopkins and she literally watched my children grow up missing very few of their biggest milestones. She is a dear, dear friend, a confidant (one of two people that I share everything with), and an amazing classroom volunteer. I will miss her so very, very much. Please keep her and her family in your prayers. This woman has been such a blessing to sooo many. So many of my first graders have read to her over and over again. She played grandma to so many, including my own children, on Grandparents’’ Day when family members couldn’t be there, and she literally saved every single card that my students made for her, going back 18 years. She also made homemade, individualized Valentines for ever single student in my class, and never ever forgot to bring back an educational souvenirs from her worldly travels. and did so much more. I truly love her with my whole heart and will miss her so much. The world really needs more people just like Mrs. Frank. She is truly irreplaceable. My daughter Kalea said it best, “She was an angel before she even got to heaven.” You have inspired all of us in so many ways Mrs. Frank. You played a huge role in shaping who my daughters and I am today. We love you and will miss you so much.
