Davis, Elgra
February 6, 1940 - October 2, 2021
Elgra E. Davis, age 81, of Greensboro, North Carolina, departed this life Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 1 a.m. He was born February 6, 1940 in Birmingham, Alabama, the son of Melvis C. Davis and Addie Bell Franklin Davis. Mr. Davis is survived by his loyal, constant and committed son Steve Hayes and faithful daughter-in-law Crystal Hayes of Virginia, loving daughters Doris and Malaika Davis of New York, a sister Betty Davis of North Carolina, a sister Conchetta Witt of Alabama, a brother Arnold Davis of Alabama, a brother Cecil "Butch" Witt of Alabama, a favorite niece Reema Owens of North Carolina and a very special and devoted caregiver Mae Phillips of North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Elizabeth Davis Harris and one brother, Melvis "Chucky" Davis. He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends whom he touched in many ways.
Mr. Davis was a Navy veteran and served honorably. His experience in the Navy played a very important role in his life. He frequently pointed out that the Navy taught him the value of discipline, teamwork, and investing in a cause larger than himself.
Mr. Davis previously resided in Be'er Sheva, Israel for 8 years and in Abuja, Nigeria for 12 years as well as time spent in Belgium prior to returning to the U.S. and continuing his import/export business of precious commodities and supportive services for veterans and the Muslim community nationwide.
Mr. Davis was a devout and faithful Muslim who believed "Surely, to Allah we belong and to him shall we return."
Mr. Davis is presented by Woodard Funeral Home. The family has chosen to have a private celebration of life for Elgra with his immediate relatives and requests that sadaqa (donations) be made in lieu of flowers to your local Muslim organization.
