George Wilkinson Obituary

George Richard Wilkinson III

Greenville

George R. Wilkinson passed away suddenly at his home, Tuesday August 20th.

George was a loving and kind brother, Dad, and friend to all who knew him. He never met a stranger. George was a lifelong lover of all things sports and history. He was an avid Virginia Tech fan after living in Virginia for some time where his son was born, the light of his life. He, also, loved collecting sports cards and model trains. In the 80's and 90's George was active in many wildlife conservation groups: Ducks Unlimited, NWTF, TU, QU, and Tu.

George attended Donaldson Elementary, Hughes Junior High, and The McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tenn. While at McCallie, he played on the junior high football team, and in high school, on the varsity soccer team and varsity swim team. His senior year, George made the highest score at McCallie on the National Scholastic test for history. George, also, went to camp Greenville with his identical twin, Billy. As twins, growing up, they were often the center of attention wherever they went.

George graduated from Presbyterian College in 1973 with a BA in History. He was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. After college, George was employed by Milliken at the Gailey Plant and later Ruth Originals. In 1985, George was appointed President of Covington Grocery, Covington Virginia, where he excelled and was honored as the President for the Virginia Wholesalers and Distributors Association for devoted service. In 2005 George and his brother, Billy formed Whippoorwill Farms, as organic vegetable producers. They were vendors in the 1st downtown Greenville Farmer's Market on Court St. In 2006 to present, George was employed with Lowes.

George was the son of the late Dr. George and Millie Wilkinson. He is survived by his son, George R. Wilkinson, IV, Greenville, SC.; brother, William McAllister Wilkinson Greenville, SC; sisters, Richie Roper Wilkinson Bologni and her husband, John Louis Bologni, Walnut Creek, Ca., MaryEllen Wilkinson, Travelers Rest, SC, and Milicent Anne Wilkinson, Greenville, SC.; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be Friday, 2:00 p.m. at Mackey Mortuary, with Dr. Michael J. Hoyt officiating.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, Presbyterian College

To the family of George Wilkerson: I was a fraternity brother with George at Presbyterian. Personally, I found George to be one of the nicest guys I have ever met. George was bright, honest, sincere. He loved fast cars life, in general. I am saddened to hear of his death and I will miss him greatly, even though we saw each other only occasionally. Thanks for the opportunity to honor, in this brief note, my friend, George.

George and Billy were two of my best friends growing up. After George moved to Virginia I lost contact with him. I wish I had known he was back in the Greenville area. George was a wonderful friend with a great personality that made him a friend to everybody he met. He was much like his father in that way, who always kept us entertained when we were kids. George and Billy had "twin" collies named Blackie and Trixie. Goodbye old friend.

I was president of Pi Kappa Alpha at PC when George became a pledge then a brother. That, and being from Greenville myself, gave us an instant bond. I recall last seeing him at a PC Homecoming a couple of years ago. He always displayed his delightful smile and good word. Rest in peace, Brother.
