Dr. John Bruce Carlock. Jr., 87, died at his home near Due West, SC April 5, 2013.

Born in Pittsburgh, PA to John Bruce Carlock Sr. and Sydney Frances Whiteside, Bruce lived a life that belonged on the best seller list. His careers included training spies for the Air Force during the Cold War and teaching English and theater at Erskine College, where he was recognized as teacher of the year.

Bruce is preceded in death by his wife Ruth McCardle Carlock, daughter Rebecca Webb Landry, and son David Matthew Carlock. He is survived by daughter Elizabeth Carlock, son John Bruce Carlock III, daughter-in-law Pamela Carlock, son-in-law Bill Landry, and grandchildren Benjamin Goldstein, Sydney Carlock, Michael Webb, Madeline Carlock, Ryan Webb, and Jianna Carlock.

A private memorial service will be conducted later.

Bruce was a passionate advocate of human rights. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name can be made to the Sothern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Avenue, Montgomery, AL 36104.
