Clara Martha Beeks Verna


Clara Martha Verna, 82, of Greenville, widow of Ralph G. Verna Sr., died Sunday, July 14, 2013.

Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Luther B. and Annie Lue Hall Beeks.

Martha was a graduate of Greenville High School and Anderson University. She retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad. Martha was known for her wit, love of sports and was active in several Bridge Clubs. She was a member of the Botany Woods Community Club. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Clarice Wilson Garden Club. As a lifelong resident of Greenville, she had been active in several local churches. She served as the ladies basketball coach while a member of Pendleton Street Baptist Church and served on the Personnel Committee while a member at Hampton Heights Baptist Church. As a member of Edwards Road Baptist Church she served as librarian and was instrumental in starting Ladies First Choice. She is a current member at Taylors First Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, Ralph "Vern" G. Verna, Jr.; sisters, Grace B. Cole and Jean B. Hudson (Lee) all off Greenville; a granddaughter, Fallon Paige Reynolds of Watkinsville, Ga. and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her brother, L. Broadus Beeks Jr. and sisters, Margaret B. Bramlett, Anne B. McKinney and Eloise B. Schissler.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 17, 3pm in the chapel at Taylors First Baptist Church with Dr. Jimmie Harley officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1:30 until 2:45 prior to the service at the church.
