John R. Terry


John R. Terry, Jr., 92, husband, of Elizabeth Tollison Terry, died Monday, October 7, 2013 at home.

Born in Fountain Inn, SC, he was the son of the late J.R. and Lucy Spouse Terry.

He was founder and Chairman of the Board of Terry Construction Company. He was a member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School Classes. John served 12 years on the Asbury Hills United Methodist Camp Board of Directors and 6 years as chairman. He was past President of the Greenville Lions Club and past District Governor of District 32A. He was past President of the S.C. Lions Inc and was the recipient of Lion Melvin Jones Fellows. He was in the S.C. Lions Hall of Fame and was awarded the Greenville Lions Club "We Serve" award.

Mr. Terry was past President of Carolina's Branch of the Associated General Contractors and past Director of AGC of America.

John served in World War II as Captain in the 12th Engineers Combat Battalion. He received the Distinguished Service Cross, Bronze Star and Purple Heart with three clusters. His unit received the Presidential award and were involved in five campaigns.

He graduated from Clemson College in 1942 and from MIT in 1947.

In addition to his wife of 68 years, he is survived by sons, Wm. Ronald (Janice) Terry, J. Michael (Barbara, deceased) Terry; daughter, Betty (Charles) Pellett; grandchildren, Michael (Shirley) Terry, Don (Natalie) Terry, Melissa (Chris) Blackwell, Will (Suzanne) Terry, Joy (Joey) Wardlaw, Lisa (Joey) Tollison; and 13 great grandchildren; three sisters, Frances Hatch, Lucy Babb, and Caroline Hawthorne. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lewis Terry, J. W. Terry, Ansel Terry, and an infant daughter, Sally Terry.

Visitation will be held Friday, October 11, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the Downtown Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
