Dr. William Newton Carmical III (Mike), 61, of 109 Ashmore Court, husband of Deborah Piper Carmical, passed away Tuesday, January 22, 2013.

Born in Lumberton, NC, he was the son of the late William Newton Carmical, Jr. and Rose Watson Carmical.

Dr. Carmical earned his B.S. Degree in Textile Chemistry and Masters Degree in Textile Technology from N.C. State University. He later went on to receive his PhD. in Textiles and Polymer Science from Clemson University.

Mike worked in the textile industry throughout NC and GA, settling at EMC Industries in Easley as Quality Control Manager in 1978.

Dr. Carmical entered the teaching profession as a second career, earning his teaching credentials via the Critical Needs Program for SC. He taught physics, chemistry and physical science at Easley High School for the last 17 years.

Mike sang bass in the Pickens Presbyterian Church choir and the Men's Chorus. He was a member of the Session, served on the Board of Directors for the Child Development Center, and was the President of the Pickens-Liberty Lions Club. His love of music and teaching lead him to serve on the Board of Directors for Preserving Our Southern Appalachian Music (POSAM), EHS Academic Advisor for the Environmental and Robotics Clubs and a founding member of the Every Other Wednesday (E.O.W.) Blue Grass band.

Dr. Carmical will be remembered for his compassion for his students and the great sense of humor and love of life he shared with others.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Hannah Elizabeth Carmical of Greenville; two sisters, Kathy Carmical of Lumberton, NC and Reverend Marion Carmical of Whispering Pines, NC; and a brother, The Honorable J. Stanley Carmical of Lumberton, NC.

A service to celebrate Dr. Carmical's life will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 1:00 PM at Pickens Presbyterian Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM at Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pickens Presbyterian Church Child Development Center, 311 W. Main St. Pickens, SC 29671.
