Obituary Condolences

Jan Howard

Greenville

On August 7, 2015 Jan Nanette Robinson Howard passed away at her home. Jan was a vibrant asset to the Greenville community, especially the nonprofit community. Her passing leaves a void that will be in the community for some time.

Jan leaves to mourn, two sisters, Delta Wright of Houston, Texas and Judy Valladares of Universal City, Texas. She also leaves a close friend, Teresa Powell, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Jan was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Howard.

Jan exemplified the meaning of a "true people person". Her life will live on through her service to those she cared about and loved. Jan worked tirelessly with nonprofit agencies that promoted her personal mission: to serve. She was a faithful member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where she served as a Deacon and on several outreach ministries.

Jan was employed at Harvest Hope Food Bank, Inc. as the Special Events Coordinator. Her work prior to this position displays her heart for community service: The Pleasant Valley Connection as Development Director (2014) , Michael's Way as Executive Director (2012) and Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County as Development Director (2009). Before her nonprofit career focus, Jan worked with Michelin Tire Corporation, Dunlap Sports, Inc and The Spink Company where she served in Administrative Assistant and Sales Coordinator roles.

Always one to service, Jan served on numerous Greenville County nonprofit boards. She was a founding member of the Rosewood House of Recovery, Canterbury, FAVOR, Bridges From Augusta, Inc., Greenville Rape Crisis , Dining for Women, Greenville Chamber of Commerce Membership Committee, Generations Group Home, Latin/Hispanic Tropicana Event, McCarter Presbyterian Church Missions' Committee , Nazareth House Ministries, Project Care, The Stephen's House, South Carolina Ovarian Cancer Foundation, and Support Outreach Ministries. She also was a freelance grant writer and wrote many successful grants for local agencies.

Jan was honored for her HARD work: American Red Cross Heroes Campaign 2006 Volunteer of the Year Recipient, YWCA 2007 "Dream Achiever" Award Recipient and Volunteer of the Year Award 2002 Recipient by Project Care.

The song "May the Work I've Done Speak for Me" is perfect for the life and legacy of Jan Nanette Robinson Howard. The last phrase she would frequently text is "SERVE YOUR COMMUNITY".

Ms. Howard is at The Mackey Mortuary where the family will receive friends Monday, August 10 from 2:30pm to 3:15pm with a service following to celebrate her life at 3:30pm with the Reverend Johnna Camp officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Christian Church, 704 Edwards Road, Greenville, SC 29615.
