Maggie Josephine Pennington Hughes, 83, of 129 Marion St., widow of Clifton Hughes, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at Laurens County Hospital.

Born in Laurens County, she was a daughter of the late John Larkin and Betty Josephine Gillespie Pennington, a homemaker, a member of Welcome Holiness Church of Gray Court, and attended Rose of Sharon Holiness Church.

Surviving are five sons, Albert Hughes and Don Hughes, both of Laurens, John Alvin Hughes, and John William Hughes, both of Gray Court, and Billy Hughes of Clinton; one brother, Woodrow Pennington of Laurens; three sisters, Velma Wilson of Clover, Mammie Ruth Brewer of Greenwood, and Elsie Mae Pennington of Greenville; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Elizabeth Crowe.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at Hickory Tavern Church of God, conducted by the Revs. Roy Russ, Shannon Wham, and Terry Wilkerson, with burial at Highland Home Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family is at the residence, 129 Marion St., and will receive friends at Kennedy Mortuary from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight.
