Martha Morgan Obituary

Martha Frances Morgan of 22 Warner St. died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005.

Born in Central, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Francis Burt and Ethel Robinson Morgan. Martha Frances was a graduate of Furman University and Scarritt College and received her master's at Emory University. She was a member of Zetosophia Academic Honor Society at Furman University. She was an educator in the Greenville County Schools and taught English and Latin at both Hughes and Greenville High School. She was a member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church and was a member of the Robert Morris Sunday School Class and taught the Susannah Wesley Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Administrative Board of the church.

She was a member of the Crescent Community Club, the Crescent Music Club, the Greenville Woman's Club, the Greenville Garden Club, Greenville Country Club and the Lake Junaluska Assembly.

Martha Frances had a continuing affection for her former students. She was most proud of the Morgan Meditation Garden at Furman University which she and her sister, Elizabeth, established in memory of their parents.

Martha Frances had a zest for life, continually seeking knowledge and new experiences. The family would like to thank the dedicated friends and neighbors who loved, learned from and cared for Martha Frances. They also thank her caregivers for their wonderful and kind help.

She is survived by her sister, Ethel Elizabeth Morgan of the home; three cousins, Mary Frances Morgan of Greenville, Kathleen Morgan Donnelly and her husband, Edmund, of Hilton Head, S.C., and Mary Eugenia Dudley Stone and her husband, Cornwell, of Chester, S.C.; and her dear friend, Bett White of Greenville.

Funeral services will be conducted in the Memorial Chapel of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005. Visitation will be held before the service in the parlor of the church from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be at Springwood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Morgan Meditation Garden at Furman University, c/o Betsy Moseley, 3300 Poinsett Hwy., Greenville, SC 29613, or United Ministries, 606 Pendleton St., Greenville, SC 29601, or the charity of one's choice.

Miss Morgan was my teacher for each of my four years at Greenville Sr. High. I most remember her catchphrase 'whoa now, Latin lives today!' It does indeed, Miss Morgan, pax vobiscum.
