Richard Hughes Obituary

Richard Brown Hughes

Atlanta, GA

Richard Brown Hughes was born in New Haven, CT on April 21, 1935 and died in Atlanta, GA on November 20, 2012.

He was a graduate of Sewanee University with a masters in Creative Writing from Johns Hopkins University . Rich married Beth Farris of Montgomery, AL in 1961. Rich served in the US Air Force and was honorably discharged as a Captain. Being a master wordsmith with an immense creative talent, Rich excelled in advertising, working with Henderson Advertising in Greenville, SC and BBDO in Atlanta. An entrepreneur at heart, he also opened agencies in California and Georgia. One of his notable agencies was Tarkenton-Hughes (co-founded with football Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton). He was a life-long Christian role model to his family and friends, serving as an elder with 4th Presbyterian (Greenville) and attending Peachtree Presbyterian (Atlanta). Known as "The Rocket" for his explosive golf game, he carried a single-digit handicap as a longtime member of Atlanta Country Club. In 2002, Rich realized a life's dream with the publication of his first novel, the historical thriller Firefly. In 2012, Rich published a revised version of the first book, now called Code Firefly, and its sequel, Coat of Nails -- all while being under hospice care for emphysema. (Both novels are available on Amazon.)

Rich is survived by his wife of 51 years, Beth; daughter, Gwen Hughes Hinton (Mike); grandsons Luke and Damian Hinton; son, Kevin (Andrea); grandsons Jason and Parker Hughes; and his brother, Warren (Betsy).

The memorial service will be held in The Kellett Chapel of Peachtree Presbyterian Church on December 1, 2012 at 1:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to The American Lung Association (www.lung.org), 1301 Pennsylvania Avenue, Suite 800, Washington, DC 20004.

Beth and Family,

Jane and I were saddened to learn of Dick's death. I worked with him at Henderson from 1967 until you left for CA and have wondered over the years where you were. He was talented and fun to work with. I also remember the fun we had playing poker... many times at your house. This past summer I saw an article in a Greenville News supplement by-lined by a Dick Hughes and called the fellow hoping it was Dick. It would have been nice to have reconnected.

We are thinking of you.

Al and I will never forget you and the many fun times we had, from high school to the great time we had at our 50th anniversary. May you rest in piece. Love you Joyce and Al

Flora & I met Rich years ago at a Pulmonary rehab program. We all had a serious problem. Rich brought humor to every session, we became very good friends. Rich was brilliant & sharp witted, he brought tears of joy with his stories & comments, those same tears are now saddened at our loss. Rich is now at peace, he does not have to struggle to breathe anymore.
God will surely say "Welcome & well done, good & faithful Servent."
We will miss you Rich,
Fred & Flora Emmons

Such a true gentleman and wonderfully gifted man. I worked with Dick at Henderson Advertising as receptionist, and looked forward to his smile each morning. I am so thankful to have known him.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
