Samuel Duprey Gaillard, Jr.

Greenville - Samuel Duprey Gaillard, Jr., 88, of Greenville, died Sunday, August 26, 2018.

Raised in Anderson, he was the son of the late Sam D. Gaillard and Lillian Clark Gaillard. He was the loving husband of the late June Buchanan Gaillard for 63 years.

Sam held a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the University of South Carolina graduating in 1951 where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He served as Staff Pharmacist at the United States Army Dispensary at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. in 1951. Then he served in a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital as a Sergeant First Class Infantry Corpsman in the Korean War from 1952 to 1953. Sam was a compounding pharmacist who owned and operated Alexander Drug Company on Pendleton Street in Greenville from 1957 to 1997. He served three terms as President of the 13th District Pharmaceutical Association of SC and two years on the Alumni Advisory Panel to the College of Pharmacy at the University of South Carolina. Sam was named a life member to the South Carolina Pharmaceutical Association and founded Independent Pharmacies, a group of independent pharmacies that operated in the Upstate. He was a member of the American Legion and after retirement, a volunteer for the Greenville Mental Health Center where he was named Volunteer of the Year in 1999. Sam was a charter member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Greenville.

He is survived by a daughter, Polly Gaillard; three sons, Gil Gaillard (Karen), Kyle Gaillard (Napatsada), and Kip Gaillard (Amy); ten grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Sam was preceded in death by two sisters, Lib Sloan and Frances Lee.

A visitation will be held Friday, August 31, 2018 from 11:30 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. at St. Matthew United Methodist Church with a memorial service to follow at 1:00 p.m. in the sanctuary.
