Stanley Sheftall Obituary

Stanley Waring Sheftall, DDS

Greenville - Dr. Stanley Waring Sheftall passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 25, 2018, at his Florida home.

Born April 20, 1938, in Gaffney, SC, Stan was active in scouting, reaching Eagle Scout, the highest rank in scouting. He played all sports while attending Gaffney High School, but his true claim to fame was marrying Miss Gaffney 1955.

He enlisted in The United States Army, achieving the rank of Sergeant, and earned his airborne wings and Green Beret in one of the earliest Special Forces Units. He was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC, and served two years active duty. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, he graduated from Furman University, with a BS in Chemistry. Stanley then moved his family to Richmond, VA, where he graduated from The Medical College of Virginia, earning his degree as a Doctor of Dental Surgery. He and his family then settled in Greenville, SC, where he practiced dentistry for more than 40 years.

During his life, Stanley was a member of The American Dental Association, The South Carolina Dental Association, The Piedmont Dental Society, and The Greenville County Dental Society. He served his community by being a provider for children in The Head Start Program, a staff member of The Greenville Hospital System, a member of the Greenville Sertoma Club, and by volunteering at Augusta Circle Elementary School teaching The Great Books Series. As an active member of First Baptist Church in Greenville, he served as a deacon, and taught Royal Ambassadors, influencing many young men's lives. He enjoyed being a member of numerous clubs: The Poinsett Club, The Greenville Country Club, Lamplighter's Dance Club, Nine O' Clocker's Dance Club, The Paladin Club, and The Greenville Touchdown Club.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth Ezell Sheftall; his children, Stanley W. Sheftall, Jr., DMD (Susan), and Pam Sheftall Huffman (Doug); his grandchildren, Virginia Sheftall Riley (Nick), Sam Matthews (Katie), and Elizabeth Carver (Bart); his siblings, Myrna Sheftall Rothfeder (Alan) of Montgomery, AL, and

Ben F. Sheftall, DMD (Kay) of Charleston, SC; five nieces and nephews, six great nieces and nephews, and many cousins.

A memorial service celebrating his life is scheduled for Saturday, March 17, 2018, at The First Baptist Church, 847 Cleveland Street, Greenville, SC 29601.

Visitation will be in the narthex starting at 2:00pm, followed by the service at 3:00pm.

Almost two years have gone by since Dr. Sheftall's passing, and tonight I have Just learned of this. For a long while I have asked about him because I wanted to tell him personally what a great dentist he was for me, and I'm sure, for many others. I'm sorry I was never able to tell him these things after he retired. I hope he had a happy life in retirement and did all the things he hoped to accomplish.
