Greenville - Sterling William Smith, of Greenville, SC, entered into eternal rest Thursday, November 30, 2017.

Sterling "Brass" was born April 17, 1929 and was the son of the late Pierce McBee Smith and Nanny Thomasson Smith.

Sterling graduated from Greenville High School and Clemson University. He was retired from Diversco, Inc. and was a member of St. Paul's Church. Sterling was a veteran of the Korean War. He played football at Clemson under Coach Frank Howard. In the 1951 Orange Bowl, he made the game saving tackle for a safety to give Clemson an Orange Bowl victory over Miami 15-14. Brass was a charter member of Holly Tree Country Club where he enjoyed many years of great golfing.

Sterling was preceded in death by his wife Curtis Crosby Smith.

He is survived by his children, Sterling William "Brassie" Smith (Marnie), Norma S. Basinger, Sandy S. DeLapp (Robert), Patrice S. Gibson, and Pierce "Mac" Smith (Anne); nine grandchildren Kinloch S. Bell (Scott), Margaret B. Smith, Rush Basinger, Storm Basinger, Robert E. DeLapp, Sterling E. DeLapp, Riley S. Gosis (Misha), Pierce M. Smith and Hugh E. Smith; a great grandchild, Langdon Sterling Bell. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Pat O. Smith.

The family would like to thank Angie Morris, his faithful, loving caregiver and friend.

A graveside service will be held Sunday, December 3, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Dr., Greenville, conducted by Rev. Thomas Brown.
