Lib Jenkins


Mary Elizabeth Rainey "Lib" Jenkins, age 91, died at home on Monday, September 1, 2014, with family by her side.

Lib was born in Greenville, South Carolina, daughter of the late George Steven and Grace Riddle Rainey. She was a graduate of Greenville High School Class of 1940, and until recently enjoyed joining classmates for reunions.

After graduating from Erskine College, Lib began a teaching career with Greenville County Schools which lasted 34 years. She was a fourth grade teacher at Fork Shoals Elementary for 17 years and a teacher of fifth grade at Bryson Elementary and Fountain Inn Elementary.

Lib had a deep and abiding faith and a commitment to Fork Shoals Baptist Church where she was a member for 68 years. She was a Sunday School teacher and member of WMU. Her devotion to her community was enjoyed by many who shared her garden, her home, and "Lib's Barn" for social and church gatherings.

She was a life member of the Fountain Inn Music Club and a founder of the Mary Deck Jenkins Patrick Music Scholarship at Erskine College. She was involved in many civic and community activities.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Clyde David "Pete" Jenkins, Jr.; a daughter, Mary Deck Jenkins Patrick; and a brother, John R. Rainey and his wife Doris.

Lib is survived by a daughter, Susan Jenkins of Fork Shoals; a son, Clyde David Jenkins, III of Greenville; and three grandsons, Joseph Howard Patrick, III (Emily), David Jenkins Patrick (Emily), both of Greenville, and John Rainey Patrick (Rebecca) of Greenwood. Also surviving are great grandchildren, Mary Laurel Patrick, Joseph Howard Patrick, IV, Lucy Caroline Patrick, Ella Grace Patrick, and Mary Deck Patrick.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2014 at 1:00 PM at Fork Shoals Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Cannon Funeral Home, Fountain Inn.
