Charlie Gertz Obituary

Charlie Gertz, age 76, passed away June 13, 2003, at Bethesda Naval Hospital. He resided at the home of Joye and Donald Miller, of Germantown.

Charlie served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years. His most interesting naval tour involved flying over 100 missions with the famed Hurricane Hunters. After retiring from the Navy in 1963, Charlie had a notable career as a television meteorologist. He was Washington's "Fearless Forecaster" from 1969 to 1972 on WTOP Channel 9. He went on to Greenville, where he was known and admired as "Charlie Said It Would" from 1978 through 1992 on WYFF Channel 4.

Charlie is preceded in death by two wives: Lucille S. Gertz, of 43 years, and Barbara Davis Gertz, of 10 years. He is survived by his two daughters, Charlene Gertz Anderson and Joye Gertz Miller; his three sons, Paul M. Gertz, Charles M. Gertz Jr. and Rick Madden; three stepchildren; 11 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Charlie is remembered for the sparkle in his blue eyes that lit the way for many. He taught his children to have dignity and strength and to walk tall through life.

A tribute to his life will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at National Naval Medical Center's memorial auditorium, building 2, 8901 Wisconsin Ave., Bethesda.

Donations may be sent to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Fund, 8901 Wisconsin Ave., Bethesda, MD 20889. - Chambers Funeral Home & Crematorium.
