Fred Butler Obituary
Fred C. Butler

Fred C. Butler, 93, of Greenville Place, widower of Dorothy Ligon Butler, died Saturday, October 27, 2012.

Born in Honesdale, Pa., he was a son of the late Dr. George C. and Florence Bryant Butler and a resident of Greenville since 1963.

Mr. Butler was a 1941 graduate of Lehigh University, and was a World War II Veteran serving as an Engineering Officer aboard the destroyer Hazelwood (DD-531) in the Pacific for two years of his three-years in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Butler was awarded the Silver Star Medal. He worked as an industrial engineer and plant manager for two textile machinery companies in the area and he was an active member of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church where he served as Church Treasurer, basketball coach and Sunday School teacher.

Some years ago, Mr. Butler, noting serious decline in the membership and attendance at the main worship service in his own and other local churches and the Denomination, noting a rejection of traditional beliefs and a wavering work ethic within the Clergy structure, publicly called for a substantive reform of church policy and governance. His efforts were noted by some, his search for truth commended, but results were negligible. The last question he raised, after a lifetime devotion to United Methodism was, "Where will the Church be in ten years?"

In retirement, Mr. Butler was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, and Greenville United Ministries and also was a long-time secretary-treasurer of the Furman Men's Golf Association. He was a member of the South Carolina and the Wayne County, Pa. Historical Societies and the Lehigh Univ. Alumni Assoc.

Surviving are his daughter, Ruth Anne Butler Pate and her husband Gerald; step daughter Elaine Carroll McCue and her husband Richard, all of Spartanburg; five grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

The Memorial Service will be held Monday, October 29, 2012, at 1:30 p.m. in the Thomas McAfee Downtown chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Francis Asbury United Methodist Church, Miracle Hill Ministries or charity.

The family will be at their respective homes.
