George H. McKee Obituary
Lt. General George H. McKee, USAF (Ret.)

Falls Church, VA

Lt. General George H McKee, USAF (Ret.), a native of Greenville, died on January 6, 2015 at the age of 91. Lt. General McKee attended Paris High School prior to enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1940. Following pilot training in 1943, he was assigned to the Eighth Air Force as a B-17 pilot and completed thirty-five combat missions with the 390th Bomb Group in England. Most of his military service after World War II was with the Strategic Air Command, where he commanded the 319th Bomb Wing, the 97th Bomb Wing, the 72nd Bomb Wing, the 38th Air Division and the 8th Air Force. He was the Commander of the Air Training Command at the time of his retirement from the Air Force in September 1975.

He was appointed by President Carter to be the Governor of the United States Soldier's and Airmen's Home in Washington, D.C. In 1978, with subsequent appointments by Presidents Regan and Bush. In recognition of his dedicated leadership and caring advocacy for the members of the Soldier's and Airmen's Home, Lt. General McKee was awarded the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal by the Army, the Exceptional Civilian Service Medal by the Air Force and the Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service.

His military decorations include three Air Force Distinguished Service Medals, two Legion of Merits, the Distinguished Flying Cross, Five Air Medals and the Spanish Air Force's Legion of Merit. He was a graduate of the University of Omaha and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-two years, Nikki,; his parents, Roger and Bulah McKee; brothers Tom, Clark and Wade; and his sister Elizabeth Roberts.

He is survived by daughter Beverly Wilson of Clayton, GA; son Lt. Colonel George M. McKee of Alta Loma, CA; four grandsons; one granddaughter; seven great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons; and his sister, Mary Kate Morgan of Greenville.

Lt. General George H. McKee's memorial services will be held at Falcons Landing, 20530 Falcons Landing, Potomac Falls, Virginia 20175 and his interment services will be at Arlington National Cemetery. Both will be at a later date.
