Carole McCauley Obituary

Carole S. McCauley
Carole Spearin McCauley, prolific writer and resident of Greenwich for 42 years, died Friday, August 24, 2018. Born April 18, 1939 and raised in the Berkshires to a French-Canadian family, she graduated from Antioch College, Ohio and earned an M.A. in writing from Manhattanville College in Purchase New York. Carole was a lifelong writer, initially reporting for The Berkshire Eagle when she was 16, in the publishing industry in Manhattan, where she also managed the Grail Art-Bookshop, before forging her career as an author. Her passion and forte was creative writing (literary fiction, short stories, poetry) and medical nonfiction. She published 13 novels (her latest is How She Saved Her Life, available via Amazon) and has appeared in about 200 periodicals and anthologies. Time Magazine called her novel Happenthing "probably the world's only computer-assisted feminist novel." Carole is predeceased by her loving husband, Arthur Leo McCauley, and survived by their son, Brendan Spearin McCauley, daughter-in-law Nadya, and their two children. Carole cared about people, their lives, and books. Her Celebration of Life will be 4-8 p.m. Friday, August 31 at 31 Arch Street, Greenwich. Carole, you are loved and will be missed dearly.

The Lewis Family

September 5, 2018

So sorry to read of this great loss of the family. The strength from God can sustain you through this difficult time now and in the days ahead. May the family find a measure of comfort in the loving support of each other and friends. May your cherished memories of the times you shared bring you a measure of peace.

Carole was my best friend growing up together in Lee, Massachusetts. We stayed close over the years, even though we were separated by at least one continent most of the time. Naturally I followed her literary career, but also her family "career". Many years ago she, Arthur and Brendan (a youngster at the time) visited San Diego, and we spent many hours at lunch reminiscing about old times and looking forward to the years of life to come. I don't believe I had ever seen Carole happier than she was that day, surrounded by her family, and catching up with an old friend. As we consider her passing now, we can either cry that she is gone, or we can smile that she was here with us. Whenever I think of Carole, I shall smile.

Rest in peace, my dear friend.
