Traian Stoianovich Obituary

TRAIAN STOIANOVICH - died in Greenwich, CT on Thursday, December 22nd after a long illness. He was 84 and a resident of Metuchen, NJ. Dr. Stoianovich was professor emeritus of history at Rutgers University where he had taught since 1955. He retired in 1992. An American of Macedonian-Serb descent, he was a noted historian of the Balkans. He was also a specialist in Modern European History.

His publications include A Study in Balkan Civilization; French Historical Method: The Annales Paradigm and a four-volume study, Between East and West: The Balkan and Mediterranean Worlds.

He often lectured at historical conferences around the world and had articles published regularly in many historical journals. He wrote entries in the Encyclopedia Britannica on the subject of the Balkans and was a frequent contributor to the New York Review of Books.

He came to the United States when he was six and graduated from The University of Rochester. He served during WWII in the U.S. Army as a military intelligence officer. He won advanced degrees from New York University and the University of Paris. In addition to teaching at Rutgers, he was also a visiting professor at NYU, Stanford and McGill Universities.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marcelle Stoianovich, a noted French artist residing in Paris, France; a son, Christian Stoianovich of Los Angeles, CA who is a screen writer; and a daughter, Diana Revson of Greenwich, CT who is the Development Director of the Meserve-Kunhardt Foundation. In addition, he leaves behind his two beloved grandsons, Tripp and Alex Revson.
