Jean MacFarland Obituary

MacFarland, Jean S.
Jean S. MacFarland, Artist
Born on March 5, 1928 to Ruth and Frank Seiler of Hamden, CT, Jean MacFarland died at home of liver cancer on May 8, 2015. Jean and her husband Duane MacFarland were life-long sweethearts, first meeting when their mothers were roommates at their births in Grace New Haven Hospital in New Haven, CT. Jean grew up in Hamden and attended Yale's School of Art and Architecture. Afterwards she worked as an illustrator for an advertising agency in West Hartford and the Munson Art Gallery in New Haven. One of her cherished memories while at Yale was contributing, as an artist, to developing the shoreline diorama and animal displays at the Peabody Museum. Jean was an accomplished artist in oils, watercolors and collage, winning many blue ribbons and an occasional "best-in-show" award. Her works reflect a life-long passion for the interplay of colors and shapes, as she progressed from representational paintings to abstract impressionism. She taught children in the "after hours" program in Greenwich elementary schools and gave lessons to adults at the YWCA, several of whom afterwards achieved some recognition in the Greenwich community. In her last years, Jean was a member and historian of the Greenwich chapter of the American Pen Women. Jean leaves behind her husband of 62 years, two children Peter MacFarland of Houston, TX and Alice MacFarland-Kilcullen of Fairfield, CT and four grandchildren Dianna MacFarland Baptista, Lizzie Kilcullen, John Kilcullen and Ryan Kilcullen. At Jean's request, services will be private at St. Paul's Episcopal Church's memorial garden. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in her name to the Greenwich Arts Council, 199 Greenwich Avenue, Greenwich CT 06830 or St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 200 Riverside Avenue, Riverside CT 06878.

Dear Mac and family. We are so sorry for your loss. Jean was a lovely and gifted person. It was our great privilege to call you neighbors when we lived at the Chateau and before that when our sister/sister-in-law was the owner. Deepest sympathy.

I met Jean and Mac MacFarland almost 8 years ago when I purchased a condo at 4 Lafayette Court.Jean and Mac had resided at "The Chateau" for more years than I can count.
Early on I learned Mac referred to his bride as "SWEET LIPS",behind closed doors of course. What a charming and touching testimony for their long and successful union for 62 years.

Sending by best to the MacFarland family during this time of grief and mourning..

It is with great sadness that I say good-bye to my dear sister-in-law, Jean. We shared over 80 years of family times and memories, joys and sorrows, and I will miss being able to call her to chat. I am grateful for the number of years she had. She was always cherished, first by her parents, and all her life by my brother--he always called her his sweetheart. She was a beloved mom too to Peter and Alice. May God watch over them all in the difficult times ahead.
Lovingly,

Aunt Jean was a very special person. She always acted with grace and dignity. She gave me many happy memories when I was a child and I will cherish them. She loved her family very much. She will be missed by all of us.
