Edward Hoffman Obituary

Hoffman, Edward L.
Edward Louis Hoffman, Jr., 77, of Greenwich, Connecticut, died peacefully surrounded by his family in Greenwich Hospital on October 13, 2016 after a brief illness. Ed was a loving father, a proud grandfather, and a devoted husband for 42 years of happy marriage to his beloved wife, Caroline P. Hoffman, who survives him.
Born on December 15, 1938, in Manhattan, New York, Ed was the son of the late Edward L. Hoffman, Sr. and Eva G. Hoffman. He graduated from Paul D. Shriver High School in Port Washington, New York before earning a Bachelor and Master of Chemical Engineering from Cornell University in 1961. While at Cornell, he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and sailed on the varsity sailing team.
Ed served as an officer in the U.S. Army in the First Armored Division for two years after college and attained the rank of First Lieutenant. He earned an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1965 and then worked for three years in the Corporate Finance group at Goldman, Sachs & Co. From 1968 until 1975, he served as a vice president of the Dyson-Kissner Corporation, a New York investment firm. In 1977, Ed founded his own venture capital firm, with offices in the Chrysler Building.
Ed had a strong Christian faith, and served on the vestry and finance committee of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. He had a great love of sailing and was a member of both the New York Yacht Club and Larchmont Yacht Club. He shared this love with his family through weekly outings on his J/40 sailboat, Star Watch.
Ed had a great appreciation for the natural world and a special love for the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York. Beginning in 1984, he spent many happy summers with his family at the Ausable Club near Keene Valley. He had many close friends there and served as Vice President of the Club for nine years. Nature conservation was a cause dear to his heart.
He will be remembered as a kind, generous, intelligent, and humble man who loved learning and cherished his family. Ed is survived by his wife, Caroline; his three children, Jennifer E. Hoffman of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Edward L. Hoffman, III, of Fairfield, Connecticut, and Christina A. Hoffman of Washington, DC; and three grandchildren, Cedar, Zephyr, and Ember. They all will miss him dearly.
A funeral service will be held on October 18, 2016 at 10:00a.m. at St. Barnabas Church, 954 Lake Avenue, Greenwich, Connecticut. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to Greenwich Hospital [https://giving.greenhosp.org/] or the Keene Valley Fire Department [http://www.kvfire.org/about.html].
