Larry Hazen Obituary

July 17, 1943 - October 17, 2014 We are deeply saddened to announce that Dr. Larry W. Hazen, Podiatrist, graduated from this planet on 17 October, 2014. There will be a brief Farewell Event at Ada's Mortuary on Wednesday, October 29th from 9:00 to 11:00 AM. Please bear in mind that he would prefer laughter and stories to tears. In lieu of flowers or donations, we ask that you do what Larry did. Do something kind for someone, make someone laugh (and take good care of your feet)!

Not sure what to say?

Dr. Hazen:

I still remember you helping me with my "growing pains" (now known as plantar fasciitis) 46 years ago.

I´m very appreciative of what you did for me.

I´m glad that you got to have a wonderful retirement in an exotic locale.

Rest In Peace, Doc.

It´s been 8 years since you left us, Dr.Steve Firestone
And me still tell story´s of you when we get together which is quite often. It might be a story of swimming with sharks, skiing or sailing story´s but your always remembered...

Think of Larry often and finally decided tonight to tell two funny stories. Very few of you know of me as I go back to the days of growing up in Fresno. A few of you (Rollo) may remember me from when I was taking scuba lessons. On to my stories.
1. Thought I cracked/broke my wrist playing golf after work one night. Called Larry and told him what happened. He said to meet him at the office. So he says he had to take xrays so here I am on my belly on the floor so he can get xrays of my wrist where he usually xrays feet. A sight to behold.
2. On our way to Catalina for a nice weekend with me not knowing if I got seasick or not. Well, I do! So here is a left handed person standing over me with a needle pointed at me with the boat rocking. He does time it just right but boy does it hurt. His comment: "burns doesn't it" with that evil sounding voice he could get. Then the next day he puts me out in the dingy with a scrub brush to scrub the side of the boat clean.
Patty, sorry I never had the opportunity to know you before you guys left for Guam. Thanks for sharing Larry's dreams with him.

Dear Patty, We have never met, but Larry was in the class behind me (same as Dick Green) & I'm from Fresno and came back.
I remember Larry well and always liked him, his demeanor and happiness and his smile. I was happy to hear of his realizing his dream & going out to sea on his boat. It saddened me to hear of his passing away, and our condolences to you and your family. We hope that he was not in pain nor suffering. Our very best to you.

Patty, I am so very sorry, and I am absolutely stunned and saddened to hear of Larry's passing. He had such an air of 'little boy' around him, he just seemed so young and vibrant to us, well, we can hardly believe it. Larry most certainly had one hell of an interesting life, I will say that. Loved the stories he shared about his life, and those photo albums from your sailing adventures were something I will always remember.

Larry is now 3 months into his new adventure, and his family would like to let you know how much we appreciated all the neighbors, friends, colleagues and patients who visited him in the hospital and attended his farewell event.
The flowers were lovely, your kind donations helped feed may people at the holidays and your prayers and thoughtfulness truly were a comfort.
Very special, heartfelt thanks go to all the nurses, doctors and hospital staff who helped care for Larry. You are a blessing at such a difficult time. Always remember how much Larry loved working with you and caring for so many of Guam's feet.

Dr. Hazen was the first podiatrist I'd ever met-the first on Guam. We both joined the family and dear friends a matter of months apart (Family Medical Clinic - now The Doctor's Clinic). His wit, intelligence, and life's stories were always intriguing. He'd let me hangout in his room when I was escaping and being immature with the work's pressures- he'd listen and put me to work teaching me something, always patient with my whining (LOL), never once putting me down. I could talk to him in ways I'd never spoken with my own father. I'd joke and say that Monica and I are his adopted brown daughters (LOL). Well, gee, I roll my eyes exactly like him :-D I am so glad I got to visit & see him, before he left us, in his ornery, teasing state (he and my husband teamed up & were picking at me). He'd be please to know that I had fun at his funeral: It was a bittersweet wonderful time of remembering, reunion, laughter, hugs, pinches, etc. with staff. I miss my Doc and will forever be grateful for having him in our short lives. Thinking of "Commander" (the gentleman, Mr. Fix it, his chuckle, laugh, rolling his eyes, smirk, the sound of his shoes clicking down the clinic hall, all that he taught us about life, being kind to fellow man, and feet) will forever bring a smile to my heart and life. Love, prayers and thoughts are with you Patty.

Dr. Hazen was a genuinely great man. He was honest, charming, witty, and very nice to talk to. His sense of humor was grand, and his "Bedside manor" was "Laugh-in" worthy. Mrs. Hazen, I am deeply sorry for your loss. Larry was a fine man, envious to us all. God Bless.

Just returned from a remembrance of my dear friend, Crazy Larry Hazen. (The 'Crazy" part is an appellation lovingly bestowed on him by my kids. They remember him for, among other things, coming to an Easter Potluck at our house with a big tray of Fricasseed Easter Bunny Legs.)He was one of the kindest, most sharing men I have known. A Podiatrist, he served everyone who showed up at his door. Some could pay, some could not, no matter. A craftsman, he turned the shell of a redwood barn down the street from me into a home worthy of Martha Freaking Stewart, and he helped me with too many projects and repairs in my own home to recount here. He was also King of the Bad Joke, and always had on ready (I blushingly admit some were recycled from me). I was pleased to see no crying and carrying on, just lots of community, with people fondly recalling and sharing stories. It was just what he would have wanted. Fair winds and following seas, my friend.

I am so shocked to hear of the passing of Dr. Hazen. He will be missed by so many patients, friends, and family. I don't know what I would have done if he didn't fix both my feet that were supposedly fixed in the U.S. His bedside manner and strange jokes always kept me smiling at every visit. My condolences to his family and colleagues.

Remembrances of Larry go back to his teen years in church choir and high school. He was a very popular guy! We always liked the wild rides home when it was his turn to carpool in his folks' old Nash Rambler - not exactly the fanciest hotrod on the street, for sure.
Later in '83, he joined our family when his Dad married our Mom - with Patty at his side. We all laughed and enjoyed his humor especially when he cooked up some gigantic lobsters from Maine for us - wow!
We are deeply saddened to hear about Larry's passing and send our best wishes to Patty and sister Louise and families.

Dr. Hazen,

It has been a great honor working with you for almost 17 years at The Doctors' Clinic. I'd learned so much about podiatry and other ideas from you that I'll be able to incorporate them into my field in nursing informatics. Will always remember the fun times and your “Hazenisms” that I'd learned from you throughout the years. Also, will always cherish your sailing stories and your helpful guidance you had given me. Your mannerisms towards patients not only has been impeccable and professional, but you have a way with words that puts a smile on their faces, subsiding their fears and worries about their feet.

Fair winds and following seas on your next big adventure, my friend!

Will miss you dearly!

I met Larry and Patty about eight years ago when I first moved to Guam. My first initial thought of Larry was that this guy was crazy and was something else. Little did I know that this crazy guy would be one of the people that would greatly influence my life in the last eight years. Larry was one of the most clever, kind, and funniest individual I have ever met. I had enjoyed listening to the stories of his and Patty's adventures while sailing to different places. I admired his thoughtfulness as he knocked on our door with his special knock, bearing gifts that he thought our family would like. It may have been desserts that he or Patty had made or a "dead cow" he saw on sale in the grocery store. His willingness to help others did not have a time frame. I specifically remember my uncle calling him in the middle of the night because he and my aunt were not there to help me and my two younger cousins remove a snake out of the living room. There was never a dull moment whenever Larry was around. I did not just gain new neighbors eight years ago, but I also gained friends that will forever be in my heart. Larry, you will be missed greatly, and it was an honor and a privilege to know you these past years. Patty, I will be praying for you, as I have been. As you embark a new beginning without Larry, always remember that you are being cared for and being thought of.

October 29, 2014

The Doctor's Clinic and the community of Guam have lost a genuine soul. While not a direct patient of his, Dr. Hazen saw me once for a foot problem I was having and he took care of me on the spot. His mannerism then was that of a gentle and caring person. He gave me advise and recommended things to do to continue my foot care. He even instructed me to return whenever I had issues, which I did. I was never charged for my brief visits with him and I am eternally grateful for his care for my foot health. I've told many family and friends about the awesome treatment I get from Dr. Hazen. Reading of his passing while in the Philippines has brought sadness as I will not be there to wish him smooth sailing. Until then Dr. Hazen, rest easy now and know that I appreciate your gentle caring nature and will miss you?

It was so sad to hear of Larry's passing. We have truly lost one of the kindest, most passionate and nurturing spirits among us. When we were young he never anticipated having such a loving devoted companion as Patty at his side. It must have been a great comfort in his infirmity to know she was holding his hand. Years of devoted service to others also gave him a special peace of mind. Larry emanated caring for both friends and patients, as I can attest, having practiced medicine together and frolicked with him. Hemingway said "the good die young, and the rest of us have to struggle on without them." None of us are young anymore and I'm not sure what the implication is for the rest of us struggling on without Larry! His constant concern for those around him elevated him beyond "good" as his friends especially know. It's nice to think his "amazin" spirit will be re-united with others dear to him.
With Great Sadness, Steve

Larry was this crazy wild pod doctor sailing a small boat with Patty. He landed in New Caledonia for some months. I was working there and we had many great dinners, sailing expeditions, parties, and lots of champagne and laughter. I have missed him all these years and wish I had been able to visit him and Patty once more.

Larry....My heart is broken. I will always remember our many visits and conversations. One really stands out for me and that was when you told me how proud you were of my kids. I was lucky to witness you endure Shannon and Alyssa making ponytails out of your hair and beard and painting your fingernails. They though that was so funny and Patrick and you playing Ninji Turtles and legos on the floor. I will never take for granted our relationship over these many years and be forever grateful for our time together. Thank you for all you unconditional love, support, advice, humor and life lessons. Thank you for being an important part of my family. Thank you for all the good you did as a pod but more importantly as a human being. You will be greatly missed but in my thoughts daily. I look at the sign Rich made with words you have spoken to me many times, "The difference between adventure and ordeal is attitude." I love you. Vic
