News Death Notice

ERB, John Paul John Paul Erb, 85, of Middletown, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at his home with his family by his side. He was born in Middletown on October 1, 1928 to parents Paul John and Alice (Coolley) Erb. John worked for Armco Steel Corp for 43 years, retiring from the machine shop in 1990. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a life-member of the American Legion Post 218 and served as adjutant general for the legion. He was a member of Holy Family Parish and served as Eucharistic Minister. John was also a life-member of the Middletown Area YMCA and served on their Board of Directors. He was very active in sports and was an avid Reds fan. Mr. Erb is survived by his wife, Vilma (Slezak) Erb; son, Chris (Merci) Erb; daughters, Mary Sue Brubaker & Lisa (Michael) Dye; grandchildren, Eric (Lesley) Brubaker, Aaron Brubaker & Ethan Dye; great grandchild, Caroline Brubaker & Jocelyn Brubaker; and many nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Margaret Cravens; and brother, William Erb. The family wishes to extend their thanks to the staff of Senior Independence Hospice and special thanks to the Middletown Division of Fire and the Police Department, especially Chief VanArsdale, for their kind words & compassion in our hour of need Memorial Mass will be held Monday January 13 at 10:00AM at Holy Family Parish - St. John's Church, 1405 First Avenue, Middletown. A gathering of family & friends will be held Sunday January 12 from 1:00 to 4:00PM at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd. Immediately following Sundays gathering at the funeral home, the family will receive friends from 5:00 to 9:00 pm at the American Legion Post 218, 116 S. Main St. for a continued time of food and fellowship. Military honors will be conducted by the Middletown Combined Honor Guard after Mass. Private inurnment will be at Woodside Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Vincent dePaul Society, c/o Holy Family Parish, 201 Clark Street, Middletown, OH 45042 - OR - the American Legion Post 218, 116 S.
