News Death Notice

TRENT, Dr., Jimmie D. of Oxford, OH, passed away on February 20, 2013. Son of Floy and George Trent, Jimmie was born in Lima, OK on November 17, 1933. He graduated from Haven High School in Haven, KS in 1951, went on to Hutchinson Junior College in 1953 and then on to Kansas State Teacher's College in Emporia, KS for his undergraduate degree (l955) and master's degree (1959) where he was a nationally recognized debater and debate coach. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Kappa Delta Pi (Special Distinction) and Delta Sigma Rho-Tau Kapppa Alpha (Honorary). Jimmie served on the faculty at Eastern Illinois University and began doctoral study at Purdue University where he earned his doctoral degree in 1966. In 1964, he moved to the Department of Speech at Wayne State University where he served as an Assistant Dean in Liberal Arts and Director of the Graduate Program in the Department of Speech. In 1971, Jimmie came to Miami University as professor and Chair of the Department of Speech and Theatre, where he spent 10 years as Chair and each of the 28 years before his retirement as a teacher and scholar. The author, co-author, editor or co-editor of journal articles, conference papers, and the books, Concepts in Communication and Winning Orations, he served as the president of the Ohio Communication Association and the Executive Director of the Interstate Oratorical Association. Jimmie was an avid international traveler during all of his years in Oxford-particularly enjoying numerous trips throughout Europe and over 20 years wintering in PuertoVallarta, Mexico. A wine enthusiast, he so enjoyed the company of his many friends at wine tastings, dinners, local and regional theatre productions, and a variety of events at Miami and in Oxford and in Cincinnati. He was devoted to his family showing unconditional love and support at all times. He will be forever missed by his wife, Judith, with whom he shared 43 loving and committed years, as well as his three children; Douglas Brian Trent of Belo Horizonte, MG Brazil, Lawrence (Larry) Andrew Trent of Oxford, Terri Lynn Haines of Topeka, KS. The family is grateful to the warm care provided by the Woodland Country Manor staff during the months he lived there and to the many wonderful friends who continued their friendships with him. A gathering of family and friends will take place at a later date at their home in Oxford.A memorial fund has been established in honor of Jimmie at the Miami University Foundation to provide research and academic travel funds for faculty and students in the Department of Communication at Miami.
