Tom SEFTON Obituary

SEFTON, Dr. Tom L. Dr. Tom L. Sefton, age 88, passed away peacefully with family by his side on August 1, 2020. He was preceded in death by parents, Harry and Margaret (Daugherty) Sefton and brothers, Harry and Richard. He is survived by wife of 65 years, Norma (Schumacher); sons, Tom (Kathy), Dr. John (Diane), Steve (Michelle), and daughter, Susan (Matt) Henry; grandchildren, Ben, Lauren, Dr. Grant, Holly, Christopher, Megan, Shannon Sefton, and Caitlin and Zachary Henry; great-grandson, Carter. Dr. Sefton graduated from Otterbein University and University Health Sciences, Des Moines, Iowa College of Osteopathic Medicine, and interned at Grandview Hospital. He was a lifelong member of the American Osteopathic Association, Ohio Osteopathic Association, and Dayton District Academy. He was board certified by the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians. He served as a trustee on the Board of Grandview Hospital as well as serving on multiple hospital and community committees. He was honored with the Distinguished Service Award by Grandview for his lifetime of service. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Also, he was a member of the Ohio State High School Football Hall of Fame after serving as team physician for over 30 years at Walter E. Stebbins High School. Dr. Sefton was asked personally by W.E. Stebbins to be team physician when the high school first opened. A family practice physician for 41 years, he was devoted to his patients, but above all else, he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He will live in our hearts forever. The burial will be private. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church's music fund (https://www.westminsterdayyton.org/give) or Grandview Foundation (https://www.ketteringhealth.org/foundation/grandviewfoundation/). Dr Sefton was my family's physician for as long as I can remember. I began seeing him when I was 12 years old up until the time he retired. He was a caring and kind doctor and would spend personal time visiting with each patient, but as fine a doctor as he was, he was first and foremost a wonderful human being. He had a long and meaningful life and he and Norma raised children that were every bit as kind and compassionate. The world is a less joyful place without him. God bless you all...you're in my prayers. Lee Sturgill.

We are so sad to hear of Dr Sefton. My husbands parents (Bill and Daphne Sullivan) both were his patients. They adored him. Then they went to their son, Dr Johns office. And they adored him. Dr John is my doctor as well. I sure love him as well. What a wonderful family. Our prayers and thoughts are with you all. We love you!

I've known Tom and Norma for nearly 30 years. During that time they have been my clients and my very dear friends. For several years, Tom was my personal physician as well. In my opinion, Tom was one of the gentlest people I ever met and truly loved helping others. He belonged to a rapidly disappearing generation of gentlemen. He and Norma were two of my favorite clients and they were one of a group of about five couples that I deeply respected and admired. Tom and Norma had been married for sixty-five years and they were both an example for me to follow. I love Tom as a father and is my hope and prayer that I will see him when I go home as well.

Condolences to the entire family, all of whom I consider to be my friends. Special condolences to Norma who has been a true warrior these last several years as Tom's health continued to decline.

Love you guys.
