George H. Cain

CAIN George H. Cain, an accomplished attorney, pianist, sailor and writer, died in Farmington, CT on Tuesday April 10, 2012. Mr. Cain worked as a corporate lawyer for almost 50 years. Mr. Cain was born on August 3, 1920 in Washington D.C. and educated at St. John's College High School. An honors graduate of Georgetown University in 1942, he served as a communications officer with the 23rd "Flying Tigers" Fighting Group in China during World War II. He received a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School in 1948. During the Korean War, he was recalled as Assistant Staff Judge Advocate for the United States Northeast Air Command and organized one of the first joint service general court-martial panels under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Mr. Cain was qualified as a Law Officer (Judge) in General Courts-Martial. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for his service with the Northeast Air Command. Mr. Cain, who lived most of his life in the New York metropolitan area, had been a director and officer of a number of corporations. He had served as chief counsel for National Carloading Corporation, Cerro Corporation, Pickands Mather& Co., and The Flintkote Company. From 1980 until his death, he had been a lawyer with Day, Berry & Howard, a large New England law firm, now titled Day Pitney LLP. Mr. Cain worked principally from its Stamford, CT office. He retired as a partner in 1990 but remained Of Counsel. Mr. Cain was a member of the federal and state bars in Connecticut, New York, and Ohio, and the bar of the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Cain was an elected member of the American Law Institute, the American Bar Association, the Connecticut Bar Association, the Ohio Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, The Association of the Bar of the City of New York and numerous other professional organizations. After serving on the Council of the ABA's Senior Lawyers Division and as chair of several of the Division's committees, he was elected Chair of the Division for the 2002-2003 term. He also served a term as Chair of the Connecticut Bar Association's Senior Lawyers Section. Mr. Cain wrote and lectured frequently on legal subjects, and was the author of four books for lawyers, and numerous magazine articles, written for the American Bar Association. He was working on his fifth book at the time of his death. He was listed in Who's Who in America. Mr. Cain is survived by his wife, the former Constance S. Collins, whom he married in 1985. He has four sons by a previous marriage, George H., Jr., of Richmond, VA, James C., deceased, formerly of Lakewood, CO, John P. of Stamford, CT, and Paul J., of Roscoe, IL., a stepson, James B. Collins of Arlington, VA., and three stepdaughters, Elizabeth F. Collins of West Hartford, Patricia Collins of Potomac, MD , and Mary Collins of West Hartford, CT, four grand-children, seven step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a step great- grandchild, and a sister, Sister Madeleine Cain of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in Tarrytown, NY and his daughter-in-law, Sharon Cain of Denver, CO. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 23, 2012 in St. Peter Claver Church, 47 Pleasant St. West Hartford, CT.
