I can't believe I'm writing this note to you because I'm in shock and thoroughly saddened. I was out of town on assignment when I got word about Joe's passing - it truly made me stop and pause in disbelief. I almost immediately pictured the last time I saw Joe with that smile of his and that strong handshake. It's been 14 years since we've moved to Pittsburgh and on the rare occasion that I'd see Joe in Middletown it was like we didn't miss a beat. I'll never forget those times.
I used to love going down to Old Lyme at our cottage always enjoyed visiting the Pagano cottage with all of you - those were great memories from years ago - that's how I'll remember Joe - fondly - like those beach trips in the summer. Alot of laughs and alot of fun.
Our prayers and thoughts are with you all
With Sincerest Sympathy

I want to share this with everyone. This week we laid to rest my friend, our colleague, and a great family man. All of our hearts will never be the same. We all grieve this loss in a special way. On friday morning I returned to work. Arriving at Joe's station (Station 2) I witnessed many faces who came together to honor his life. The emotions became overwhelming for me. I began to tear, and feel a great loss. As I went closer to the doors, a sense of calm came over me. I recalled the first day I walked through that door in 1983. My first day on the job. Joe met me with a smile, because we knew one another before that day. His smile and demeanor was what we all have witnessed countless times. He put his arm around me and said "Dont worry buddy, this is a great job, you'll be fine". He then walked me to the Chief's office. After spending a few moments with Chief Riordan, Joe was tasked by Deputy Chief Scranton with showing me the ropes. We went into the bathroom area, and he handed me cleaning supplies. He looked at me and said..."ok, enough of the nice "stuff"...clean the toilets. He laughed and at that moment I had my first "Joe" story.
As I walked through that door friday, I recalled that day. A smile returned to my face, and lifted my spirit. Joe stayed with me all day, making sure we all knew it was ok. His life touched us in a lot of ways. His death leads us to great memories, and better days.
To Linda, the girls, Joe Sr., Jimmy, Joy, and Johnny, his love will always lift your hearts.
Till we meet again my friend, keep those gates open, we have more work to do!

My condolences to the entire Pagano family. Joe was my Lieutenant prior to retiring in 1996 and unfortunately I found out about this tragedy too late to make plans to return to Connecticut in time. My thoughts are with you and your family during this time of loss.

Linda,
It's me, Cathy Collins(now Hodgkinson) from good old American National Bank...We spent many years working together, shared many laughs with the other girls. Even though I haven't seen you in many years, the news of Joe's passing has left me with a heavy heart as I'm thinking of you, Marlise and Justine(both of whom I both knew as babies). My deepest sympathy and prayers go out to you and the girls.I know that nothing must be making sense at this time. Don't even try to rationalize it now...when it all seems to be too much, just remember to reach out to everyone who loves you. Miss your friendship....Love, Cathy

Linda, daughters,Jim,Joy,John,Big Joe, all family + friends,
...In our youth Joe was my next door neighbor, cousin, and best friend. We walked to grammar school together, played football yearround, and drank sodas on the cement steps of the corner store next to the laundry mat.I was over Joe's house 40 years ago this month when I saw the Washington Redskins defeat his NY Giants 72-45 and became a 'Skins fan... When we graduated grammar school they gave us paper caps with a cotton string tassle. Joe signed mine "Your best friend". There are so many memories ... Joe and I were old school. We worked hard and enjoyed simple pleasures. We were community-minded,strong, Italian-Americans who tried our best to make our families proud. Joe was all those things and more... God must have really needed an excellent player to draft Joe now. He was probably the only one that could do the job. No words can really express the depth of our loss. On behalf of myself, Deb, and all those whose lives Joe touched, please accept our sympathy.

Linda,
I don't think that we've ever met. I've known Joe for about 25 years. We palyed alot of softball for the local bars in town. His intensity on the field was unsurpassed. We never had to worry what Joe was thinking. Just a real good guy and friend.
You and the girls are in our prayers.

To the Pagano family, I cannot begin to express my sorrow for your loss. Joe is a great guy and will always have a special place in my heart. His concern for my brother when he served in Iraq never waivered. Although we serve the City in different Departments, it was always comforting to know Joe was on the scene and watching your back. My you rest in peace my friend!
