Cathy McGuirk Obituary

Born March 16, 1945, Cathy Neary McGuirk grew up in Westport, CT. She loved her life there but always said she was a "normal" Westporter. Cathy always missed really knowing her mother, who died from RA when Cathy was 7. Cathy was also predeceased by her brother, Michael. She spent many happy days with her dad both in the home and helping with his electrical appliance store. She especially enjoyed time out with him fishing in his boat. After elementary school in Westport Cathy attended Central Catholic High School in Norwalk where she was chosen "Best Female Athlete". She played every sport her physical education teacher could find in those pre- Title IX days. Her love of sport and kids took Cathy to Southern Connecticut State College where, beyond class work, she excelled as a field hockey goalie. Playing a shorter schedule than today's teams and wearing much less protection, Cathy was unscored on in four years. After graduating Cathy taught for three years at Roxbury Elementary School in Stamford, teaching 12 classes each day as well as doing lunch and bus duty, and loved it all. She especially enjoyed working with the early grades, loving their enthusiasm and desire to try anything. Cathy and her husband John, who she had married on August 17, 1968, had to make a choice on where to settle as John was teaching at North Branford High School. They decided on the lifestyle of east of New Haven and never regretted doing do. Cathy taught for one year at East Haven middle school. She then moved to Branford where she finished her thirty-two year teaching career, all at the middle school level. Cathy loved teaching in Branford and the town became her home for 49 wonderful years. It was said that Cathy McGuirk could be the greeter at the Branford Festival as she knew and was known by so many. Beyond teaching Cathy became the Branford High School Field Hockey Coach in 1977 and continued at that position for forty one seasons, retiring after the 2017 season as sole SCC Champions once again that year. No Connecticut high school field hockey coach ever won as many games (558) or state championships (10). In a league where Branford was not one of the larger schools her teams won 17 league titles and advanced to the elite "Final Four" of the state tournament an amazing 29 times in 38 seasons, including her last year. Cathy was inducted into eight halls of fame, was National Coach of the Year in special sports in 1994, was awarded the Connecticut Sportswriter's Gold Key, and in 2019 was the lone high school coach inducted into the National High School and Collegiate Field Hockey Hall of Fame. Cathy loved physical activity and playing sports from softball to golf. For years in the winter she had a group of friends that played competitive ping pong games in her basement. Her first love was tennis as she loved competitiveness and challenge of hustling to chase down balls. In the early 70's she was a tennis champion in a Branford Recreation tournament. Cathy and John traveled widely, hitting 49 states, Europe, Kenya and several Caribbean islands. They stayed 14 times on their favorite island of St. John in the American Virgin Islands at Caneel Bay. She loved reading novels and always had two going at once. She very much enjoyed gardening and observing nature in all its glory, especially birds. If you saw Cathy, her husband and best friend John was usually not far away. John, a history teacher and longtime softball coach at North Branford High School, coached field hockey with Cathy from 1980 through 2017. Cathy died from the effects of ALS on May 31, 2021. She will be missed by so many because she was loved by so many. Cathy always focused on whoever she was with and seemed to always remember things about everyone she met. Of course it was because she truly loved people and, in return, so many people loved Cathy. Friends are invited to call Sunday June 6th from 4-8 PM at W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home 244 N. Main Street Branford. Eulogies to begin at 10 AM at St. Mary Church (St. John Bosco Parish) 731 Main Street, Branford, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM. Masks optional at church. Burial will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery.

As a young coach for a rival team ( HKHS) in the early 90's, I learned early on that CT field hockey was essentially an extension of relatives. After arriving at Branford HS, we were always greeted and, following a 60-minute competition, there were always hand shakes and hugs. Cathy was an amazing coach who embraced all coaches and players as though they were her own. She was a true role model and we will truly miss her...and we will follow her lead as we continue to welcome all players and coaches to our own fields.

One thing I will always cherish about Cathy was her support & guidance she extended to me when I started coaching at SHA. She always made me feel like I could ask her anything . She was a teacher not only to her team but to her colleagues as well. My greatest memory with Cathy & John was my very first game I coached at SHA it happened to be her 500th win as a coach . Such an incredible accomplishment even though my team lost it was an honor to celebrate her... she will be dearly missed...

One of the things that I will always remember about Cathy is the support she provided to me as a young coach. She was always willing to take time to talk to me and to listen when I had questions and needed advice. I recently found a note that Cathy wrote to me in 2008 when I was given the COY award. It meant so much to me that she took the time to write and I have never forgot it. I have tried to emulate Cathy in a number of ways, including helping young coaches. She was an amazing coach, mentor, and person. We will all miss her tremendously.

Cathy was an inspiration to me as a new coach. My niece played for her as well and it was a joy to watch her bring such a passion to our sport and help build amazing young women. She will be missed on so many levels. Condolences to her family from the entire Norwalk High School Field Hockey team.

Cathy was such an energetic and welcoming presence in the SCC field hockey community. As a fellow coach I was amazed at her knowledge and presence on the field even at the end of her career.

My condolences Mr McGuirk and the many whose lives have been touched by Cathy. I was blessed to play field hockey for 4 years at BHS and I am so sad to hear of her passing. She was a wonderful coach and teacher and I am a better person for having been coached by her and John.

The world; where the students and athletes and parents she touched are scattered far and wide, and especially the Branford community, lost a very special person on May 31. Cathy was an incredible human being, teacher, coach and the perfect wife for John! I met John back in high school, in New London, where I was a cheerleader, cheering for him and others on our football team. John, I am so sorry for your incredible loss. One of my favorite memories of Cathy is when she "looked the other way" ( our daughters were likely rolling their eyes in disbelief) while a group of us who had daughters on her team playing in a State tournament game, managed to sneak out onto the field during a break in the action and actually pulled off a few old time cheers we had all done. Many of us had been former cheerleaders (one of the few sports available to girls, when we were in HS!). We gathered red and white pompoms and outfits of red and white. The officials, trying hard not to laugh, let us have our fun, then got serious and the game when on. Dear sweet Cathy, rest in well deserved peace. John, know you have a huge village of caring and supportive people to help you on the road ahead. My thoughts and prayers are with you, your extended family and all the people Cathy left better for having known her.

Mrs. McGuirk was my middle school gym teacher at BIS as the school was brand new that year, she made sports fun. Pushed me to do my best and always encouraged me. Some teachers you never forget, she was one of them. Rest in Peace. My condolences Mr. McGuirk and extended family and friends.

Mr McGuirk, it’s been years but want to extend my condolences to you. There was never a softball game where your wife wasn’t on the sidelines cheering you and the team on. Fond memories. Sorry for your loss of Cathy.

Cathy was one of the best people I've ever met. Any time you talked to her you felt she was truly listening, completely interested, and sincerely cared. She was one of the first adults to call me by my nickname when I was in high school....something so simple but something I'll never forget. John, I am so sorry for your loss, coming up with the right words is impossible, but I so admired you both an individuals, and as the coolest couple around. Thank you Cathy for all that you did, for the countless number of people you touched and the lives you shaped.I wish you could have lived forever.

A natural athlete, an amazing teacher and coach, an even better mentor and friend to all. I was fortunate to have met Cathy decades ago at BIS. To John and the legions of us diminished by her death, I send my prayers for God’s blessing on Cathy and all who mourn.

She was my middle school gym teacher then I tried my hand in field hockey. I will always have fond memories of her. Last few years I would bump into her and she always had time for a chat. This Last year she and her husband moved into where I work and I was over joyed that I would be able to see her on a regular basic. However covid hit and I didn’t have that pleasure. I will always remember and miss her.
