Anthony Maluccio Obituary

Dr. Anthony (Tony) N. Maluccio of West Hartford passed on July 8, 2019 from complications due to Alzheimer's. Tony was born on October 11, 1932 in Stefanaconi, Reggio Calabria, Provencia di Catanzaro, Italy, the son of the late Michael and Isabella (Lopreiato) Maluccio. With his mother and three brothers, he joined his father in the U.S. in 1948, where he attended New Britain High learning English and graduating in 1951. After earning a bachelor's degree from Yale he served two years in the U.S. Army. He then completed a Master's degree in Social Work at Columbia, beginning his life work in the field of domestic and international child welfare. In 1976, he earned a Doctorate in Social Work, also from Columbia. Tony taught at UConn School of Social Work for over two decades and subsequently directed the Doctoral program in Social Work at Boston College until his retirement. A Fulbright Senior Scholar at Oxford and Padua, visiting professor at Melbourne and USC, author or editor of a dozen books and over 100 scholarly articles, he also served over 20 years on the board of directors of Casey Family Services. The importance he placed on learning and scholarship was matched only by the importance of family. Family gatherings and trips were one of his greatest joys. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Janice; three children Carol (Matthew) Boyne, Michael (Mary Beth) Maluccio, John Maluccio (Jennifer Roby); and four grandchildren Nicholas (Jamie), James (Kathryn), Kelly (Kevin), and Grace. He also leaves his two brothers Joseph (Germaine) and Michael (Donna) and was predeceased by the third, Nicholas. Tony was a true gentleman and scholar who treasured his family and will be greatly missed. Tony's first job in social work was at Children's Village, now The Village for Families & Children. Donations may be made in his memory to them at 1680 Albany Avenue, Hartford CT 06105 or online. His family is deeply grateful to Seabury Meadows for their excellent care. Calling hours are at Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave. West Hartford, Sunday July 14th from 3-5 PM. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday 10 AM at Saint Peter Claver Church, 47 Pleasant St. West Hartford, with burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. I remember Dr. Maluccio from my days at UCONN SSW in the late 1960s. He was an excellent teacher and a very good communicator with his students. A very patient man. My condolences to his family.

I have fond memories as sister in law to Tony's oldest son Michael and my sister Mary Beth. Many family gatherings at their home with the Maluccio's talks about everything. Tony was a very smart and funny yet humble man he listened very intently and I could tell how proud he was when around his family moreover his grandchildren. A great man through and through and certainly left a legacy in so many ways to so many people and of course to the family he loved the most. My condolences Janice, Mike, Carol and John love to you all. Laura, AJ and Heather Gambino.
