Gertrude Carolyn Thompson Obituary

Gertrude Carolyn James Thompson, 95, of Bloomfield, passed away peacefully, Monday, May 11, 2015. She will be remembered for her dedication to her family, love of the arts, and devotion to education. Mrs. Thompson graduated from Howard University with a Bachelor's degree in Social Work and earned her Master's degree from the University of Hartford. She was a Golden member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Mrs. Thompson was a social worker for the Hartford Public Schools for more than 20 years. Her many interests included ballet, theater, and the visual arts. After retiring from the Hartford school system she pursued her passion for painting and became an active member of the Wintonbury Art League. She participated and placed in many juried shows, exhibited frequently at the Prosser Public Library and the Bloomfield Town Hall, and held exhibits as a solo artist. She and her husband David F. Thompson were married for over fifty years, making Bloomfield their home and raising their four children. She is survived by her brother Charles James, her children and grandchildren; David F. Thompson, Jr., wife Nancy and children Theo and Adam, Alan Thompson and wife Sheila, Robin Thompson and children Hayley DeBerry and Rudy DeBerry, Terry Thompson and son Tryston Garrard. She was pre-deceased by her husband David, brother Horace James and sister Gwen Dixon. Her spirit is also deeply felt by a host of loving nieces and nephews, more family, and friends. We are grateful for the excellent, attentive, and compassionate care provided by the staff at Seabury. Her life and spirit will be celebrated with a memorial service on Wednesday, May 20, 2015, at 11:00 AM at D'Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations go to the Seabury Staff Appreciation Fund, 200 Seabury Dr., Bloomfield, CT 06002.
