Ralph H. Syversen Obituary

Ralph H. Syversen, age 69, of Burlington, CT, died at home with his wife and daughter by his side on September 26, 2014, after a courageous and valiant battle against cancer. Ralph was born November 20, 1944, in Teaneck, New Jersey, to the late Harold and Harriet Syversen. He was educated in the Teaneck school system and later attended Webster Academy in Massachusetts. He returned to Closter after his graduation, spending summers working at the Demarest Swim Club. He went on to receive his BA from William Penn University and his Masters from Connecticut College. After college graduation, Ralph began his teaching career in New Jersey, which was interrupted when he was drafted into the U. S. Army in 1970, serving in the 1st Cavalry Division, assigned to the Military Police. After his discharge from the Army, Ralph returned to teaching, spending almost thirty years of his career at Canton Junior Senior High School, before retiring in 2010. Ralph earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1960, and later went on to serve as Scoutmaster of Troop 23 in Burlington for a number of years. Ralph was an active member of the community, serving a term as President of the Parish Council at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Harwinton, serving as chairman of the Burlington Summerfest for several years, and volunteering as a driver for the Burlington Volunteer Fire Department for ten years. Most of all, Ralph loved spending time with his family. He was the kindest and most loving husband and father, and his grandchildren brought him tremendous joy. His many friends and former students will remember Ralph for his sense of humor and his gentle manner. Ralph is survived by his loving wife of forty years, Sharon (nee Kidney), his devoted daughter, Kristin; three adoring grandchildren, Ethan, Breah, and Keegan; his brother, Robert (Joann); sister-in-law Barbara McGill (James); sister-in-law Marybeth Keating (Mark); three nieces, Ellen Syversen (Chris), Megan Smith (Jeff), and Sarah McGill; a nephew, Michael (Barbara); two great-nephews and two great-nieces. Friends may call at The Ahern Funeral Home, 111 Main St., Rt. 4, Unionville on Tuesday, September 30, from 3:00-8:00pm. Funeral procession from The Ahern Funeral Home will be Wednesday, October 1 at 9:15am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick Church, Collinsville. Burial with full military honors will be in Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown. Memorial contributions may be made in Ralph's name to the Burlington Volunteer Fire Department or the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
