Barbara Barrett Obituary
Barbara (Brown) Barrett, 99, of Niantic and formerly West Hartford, widow of James F. Barrett, died Monday at her home. Born June 29, 1919 in East Rutherford, New Jersey to Clarence H. and Emilie (Koch) Brown. She grew up in Ridgewood, NJ, and graduated from Dwight School in Englewood in 1937 before going on to Vassar College, graduating in 1941. Barbara and James were married Sept. 26, 1942, they lived and raised their children in West Hartford, where they lived for 50 years. Barbara was a founding member, Deacon, and Elder of Westminster Presbyterian Church, in West Hartford. The shore was a big part of her life from the time she was young, she would meet her husband James there where they both summered as kids. In later years she would spend time with her children both at the beach and Niantic Bay Yacht Club, eventually moving full time to Niantic. Barbara was a long-time active volunteer and charming hostess who will be missed by many. She was predeceased by James in 2003 and also her brother Howard L. Brown. She is survived by her four children and their spouses; James F. Barrett, Jr. and Debi Barberi of West Hartford, Richard and Silvia Barrett of West Hartford, Donald and Donna Barrett of West Granby, and Clare Gowen of Claremont, NH. 5 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive her. Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 pm at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2080 Boulevard, West Hartford. Friends and family may call on Sunday from 11 am to 1 pm at the Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave. West Hartford. Burial will be Monday at 11 am in Union Cemetery, East Pattagansett Rd. Niantic. Contributions in Lieu of Flowers may be made to Center for Hospice Southeast CT, 227 Dunham St. Norwich, CT 06360.
