Catherine Decker Obituary

Catherine Decker (Abate), 71, passed away on Friday, November 9th, 2018 at home after a lengthy battle with cancer, with her loving family at her bedside. She was born in Camden, New Jersey on January 10, 1947, but left us too soon. Catherine was an example to us all with her optimism and courage during the course of her lengthy illness. A wife and mother first and foremost, her family always brought a smile to her face. Catherine was also a loving grandmother to Hannah Lynn Parks and Hailey Elizabeth Parks and loving mother to Susan Elizabeth Decker-Fox and Lynn Elizabeth Decker-Parks. She will also be missed by her sister Arlene Abate-Carpenter, and her brothers Canio, Joseph and Robert Abate. Family and friends were always the primary focus of Catherine's world and she will be missed by her many cousins, nieces and nephews. She enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends, especially during the holidays. She also enjoyed traveling with her family to Aruba and of course, visiting with her loving family in New Jersey. Catherine was curious about all things, places and people, and believed that there was something to learn from every experience. Catherine was immensely proud of her family and she leaves behind beautiful memories for all who knew her. Catherine is pre-deceased by her parents, Canio and Elizabeth Abate, and her husband, Alvin E. Decker. Visitation will held in the Christ the King Church Parish Center, 1 McCurdy Road, Old Lyme, CT on Friday, November 16, from 5-7PM. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating her life will follow at the church on Saturday, November 17th at 11AM. Interment will be private. The family would like to thank Dr. Michael DiGiovanna and the staff at Smilow Cancer Hospital and Beacon Hospice, as well as the many friends who supported Catherine and the family during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Closer to Free Fund (Smilow Cancer Hospital), P.O. Box 1849, New Haven, CT 06508, or to, The Sisters Project, P. O. Box 1643, Wallingford, CT 06492. To share a memory of Catherine or send a condolence to her family, please visit www.rwwfh.com. Arrangements by Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, Centerbrook.

Not sure what to say?

There are so many wonderful memories we have with Catherine, she is my husbands cousin, I met her 52 years ago and loved her from the first moment. We double dated with her then boyfriend Al Decker, every Saturday night and what fun we had, laughing, dancing we danced through the next 50 years together. She was such a loving person, she made everyone she met feel very special. Even when she was battling Cancer, right to the end she wore that beautiful smile. I miss her so much. We were sisters by choice, and I will always love her, and hope she is resting in peace with all those she loved.

Cathy and I go back over 50 years, and were close friends, but once she moved to Connecticut, we slowly lost touch. I called Cathy last spring and we caught up on our lives, talking for hours, and she and I made plans to meet up this past summer when she was down visiting her aunt. It never happened. God bless you, Cathy. I know I'll see you again but in a different place. To her sister and brothers, I know how hard losing Cathy must be for you. I'm so sorry that she had to leave you so soon.

Susan, Lynn and family,
Our deepest sympathies for your loss. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. Catherine will always have a special place in our hearts. Her love, kindness and compassion was radiant. Her warmest could be felt in every conversation. My mother lovingly referred to her cousin as Mrs. Connecticut and in my heart I know that Mrs. Connecticut is surrounded by her love ones.

My memories of Catherine go back to my early days of childhood, with our famiiles vacationing together for so many years. I'll always remember the fun, her warmth and kindness. As years went by and I grew up, I may not have seen her as much, but whenever I did, her presence brought me those same feelings. She was a loving and special person and will be missed.

One of my fondest memories of Cathy is our Sunday phone calls..Being in Ca. there was a 3 hour time change so we made a 'phone date' ahead of time and looked forward to the upcoming Sunday when we would catch up on one another's lives..We talked fondly of our childhoods and shared stories of our Parents and families and our loving husbands who had both passed on .Cathy was always upbeat and positive and I so envied her outlook on life..I love the way she loved her family & admired the loyalty they all had for one another..I will miss her deeply & dearly and I am so Blessed to have been one of her many 'fans'...Heaven & Al are lucky to have you Cathy but there is such a void without you my beautiful friend..RIP..
