BARKSDALE, Cynthia Lula Mae

Cynthia Lula Mae Barksdale, also known as "Zakiah Barksdale Hakim," of Bloomfield, CT, departed this life on Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at Hartford Hospital. Born in San Francisco, CA, to the late Abraham Barksdale and Mary Zoner Barksdale of Springfield, MA. Cynthia was pre-deceased by her late husband, Talib Rasul Hakim in 1988 and sister, Michelle Z. Barksdale in 2000. She is survived by two sons, John W. King (and wife Kimberly) of Bowie, MD and Khalil R. Hakim (and his fiancée Alyson Simpkins) of Waldorf, MD; two sisters, Sonja B. Hall (and Edrick) of Hartford, CT and Sylvia Barksdale-Wilson of Springfield, MA; a brother, Ibrahim Abdul-Haqq (and Asia) of Philadelphia, PA; four grandchildren, Justin, Jibril, Zoe, and Kaleb, goddaughter Alyson Hall, of Hartford, CT and other relatives and friends too numerous to mention. Cynthia graduated from Classical High School in Springfield, MA and later graduated from Howard University, in Washington, DC with a BA in Fine Arts, obtained a MA in English from Adelphi University in New York and an MFA from the Yale School of Drama, in New Haven, CT. Cynthia was a tenured Professor of English at Asnuntuck Community College, in Enfield, CT for more than 25 years. She also taught at Central Connecticut State University, Manchester Community College, Oberlin College in Ohio, Bowie State University in MD and began teaching career in the Washington D.C. public schools. Cynthia was also a professional actress appearing most recently at Hartford Stage where she appeared in the Arthur Miller play, The Crucible. Her film work included a CBS cable film, The Resurrection of Lady Lester.
Calling hour is 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, March 11, 2013 at the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 17 John St., Springfield, MA, followed by the funeral at 12:00 p.m. Harrell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
