David Holdt Obituary

David Maurice Holdt of Tolland, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2019 at the age of 78 from Alzheimer's Disease. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on May 12, 1941 to the late Jacob and Henrietta Stewart Holdt before moving to Stratford, Connecticut. He attended Wesleyan University, receiving his BA in government in 1963. In 1967, David graduated with an MA in History from Duke University, and later earned his Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in the humanities and writing from Wesleyan in 1993. After a transformative trip to Uganda and Somalia, he went on to teach history at Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut from 1963 to 1965. His time at Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia, PA from 1967 to 1970 began his lifelong relationship with Quakerism. He returned to Connecticut, teaching at the experimental Westledge School from 1970 to 1977. For the next thirty years (1978-2008), David was a beloved teacher and mentor at Watkinson School in Hartford. He also taught at the University of Hartford from 1995 to 2011, where he received the Sustained Excellence in Teaching Award. A talented, prolific writer of numerous published poems, short stories, essays, prose and plays, he attended the famous Breadloaf Writing Conference, Wesleyan Writers Conference, and was the Artist-in-Residence at the St. Lawrence Theatre festival. David leaves behind his partner, Karen I. Case, stepdaughter, Amanda Frost and her husband Michael and son, Sef; as well as his daughter, Brooke Stratton, her husband Peter and children, James and Ada; and his son, Christopher Wood-Holdt, his partner Jenna Wetzel and their daughter, Avery. Predeceased by his brother, Richard Holdt, he is survived by his sister-in-law, Mimi Holdt, niece and nephew, Kristen and Brian Holdt. He leaves behind his former spouse, Sandra Wood Forand. In addition to books and history, David was a lover of rivers, at one time canoeing the length of the Hudson. He adored long hikes in the woods with Sky, his beloved German Shepherd, as well as baseball caps, cowboy boots, and the Red Sox. Memorial Services will be held on December 21st at 10:00 AM at the Religious Society of Friends (144 Quaker Ln. S, West Hartford, CT) and at 2:30 PM at the Watkinson School (180 Bloomfield Ave, Hartford, CT). Donations in David's memory can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Tolland Conservation Commission or Watkinson School.

Dear Family and Friends of David Holdt. This weekend, utilizing donations to the Tolland Conservation Commission, the Tolland Conservation Corp erected a memorial bench in Mr. Holdt's honor located at the terminus of the 'orange' trail on the Knofla South Conservation Property in Tolland, Connecticut. The bench provides a westward look for birders and hikers looking for a quiet spot to enjoy this beautiful beaver pond. Given Mr. Holdt's fondness of the waters of the Hudson River, we thought this would be an appropriate setting for family and friends to reflect upon his life.

I also had the privilege of having David as an English teacher at Watkinson School. Two months ago, I was at Timberline Lodge, on the side of Mount Hood, in Oregon, when I got talking with one of the employees. We quickly discovered that we both had graduated from Watkinson and both had David as a teacher! He impacted countless people and made us all better writers and readers.

I was sorry to see that David passed away. I was a senior when David started teaching at Watkinson in 1978. The seniors experienced what a wonderful teacher he was and selected him to speak at our graduation. I still remember him talking about how he took on difficult tasks because they needed to be done and he needed to do them. In that vein, he marched for civil rights in the 1960s and was arrested for it. We were lucky to have been taught by him.

Ever the Poet, ever the Teacher, ever the Gentleman. He made me believe that I had poetry in me. A beautiful soul. We were lucky to know him.

The loveliest of men, David guided his students through tumultuous teen years with grace and humor. In doing so he set an example of kindness and understanding for parents. We loved the measured consideration he gave conversations and the passion he had the beauty of words and wild spaces.
We are less one good man and we need all we have.
Love to all.

I will forever think of David Holdt as one of my favorite teachers (Watkinson class of '87.) He always had command of the classroom, engaging all his students and sharing his love of literature. Some of my favorite books are ones I read for his class. He was patient and always kind. My mother adored his column "What's a Parent to Do" in the Watkinson newsletter. There is no greater gift a teacher could give than to make students feel "seen." The world is less spectacular without him in it. My heart is heavy and I extend my condolences to his circle of family and friends. May his memory be for a blessing.

A Brilliant Man who always shared stories, laughs, and tears while teaching side by side. Like the rivers you so love, you will always run through our hearts and souls keeping us nourished here on earth and now from above!

Sincerely from the days of the ART Barn, at Watkinson!

At Watkinson David served as my writing and history teacher, my advisor, and my friend. Studying with David I was exposed for the first time to essays of EB White, the short stories of Eudora Welty and novels of Ray Bradbury. Existing along side his wide and constantly expanding frame of reference as an educator and writer was his patience and compassion. He never let you go.
I hope wherever he is now that he's able to read, write, take long walks, enjoy good wine and good company.
Thanks for everything, Mr. Holdt. I will miss you.
