Dolores Caruso Obituary

Dolores Caruso, 84, of Bloomfield, beloved wife of the late Nicholas B. Caruso, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017 surrounded by her loving family at her home. Dolores was born in Hartford, CT on October 14, 1933, daughter of the late Michael Gramegna and Lucia "Lucy" (Maulucci) Gramegna, and was a graduate of Bulkeley High School. While delivering eggs, a young Nick Caruso met Dolores Gramegna and the two married on November 28, 1953. In 1965 Nick and Dolores opened Caruso's Auto and Body Inc., a successful well known establishment in Bloomfield. After her husband's passing in 2005, she tirelessly worked with her family up until three months prior to her passing. Caruso's has enjoyed over 50 years of business and was recently acknowledged as a prominent small business by the Connecticut Small Business Administration. Dolores was a vibrant part of the Bloomfield community volunteering in numerous organizations including the Bloomfield Junior Womens Club (Past President), Sacred Heart Tabernacle Society and Lazarus Society, Girl Scouts of America (Troop Leader), and the Bloomfield Fire Department Women's Auxiliary. She was active in local politics working as a poll moderator for many years. She was an avid bowler and golfer, loved playing Bingo and scratching lottery tickets, and was a faithful communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Bloomfield and St. John's Church in Old Saybrook. Dolores was the matriarch of her family and held on to traditions, celebrating holidays, hosting events, and welcoming people into her homes in Bloomfield and Old Saybrook. She was lovingly compared to a light house by her great-grandson and described as weathering storms and eternally shining down on her family. Family was the most important thing to her and she expected the best from each of them and instilled within them her values of kindness, generosity, and faith. She leaves her daughters, Karen and son-in-law Grant McMillan of Chester and Terry and son-in-law Roger Michalman of Bloomfield; six grandchildren, Jennifer and Michael Allen, Stacey and James Blanchette, Robert and Jenifer Michalman, Nikki and William Woods, Tara and Francis Serio, and Karen-Ann and Jonathan Wabrek; twelve great grandchildren who adoringly called her "Gigi", Zachary, Andrew, and Ashlyn Allen, Alexander (A.J.) and Alyssa Blanchette, Olivia, Paige, and Sophia Michalman, Lily and Anna Woods, Morgan and Jacob Wabrek; a sister, Jean Marino of Farmington; five brothers-in-law, Richard Valenti, Lionel Santos, Albert Caruso and his wife Gail, Benedict Caruso and his wife Kathy, Joseph Caruso and his wife Adrian; four sisters-in-law, Lillian Penfield and her husband Peter, Mary Caruso, Linda Caruso, Phyllis Caruso, Carol Caruso; and a host of many loving nieces, nephews, godchildren, and devoted friends.
